Charlotte, N.C.----Limestone College held Wingate University without a field goal for the final four-plus minutes of the contest en route to a 65-61 NCAA Division II men’s basketball victory Saturday in the Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.
Wingate is 1-2 overall, while Limestone improves to 2-0 overall on the young season. The Bulldogs travel to Lander University Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Limestone opens Conference Carolinas play the same evening, visiting Queens for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Freshman forward
Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) led Wingate with 14 points and seven rebounds. Classmate
Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) had eight points and eight rebounds, while senior guard
Larry Staley (Charlotte, N.C.) posted eight points as well.
For Limestone, sophomore guard
Stewart Clark (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way with 15 points. Senior forward
Anthony Middleton (Holly Hill, S.C.) contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Junior forward
Danny Friend (Morrow, Ga.) recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks
Limestone led 31-21 late in the first half, the biggest lead for either team. Wingate cut the halftime deficit to 33-29, thanks to three-point field goals by sophomore guards
Chase Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and
Michael Bilal (Chadbourn, N.C.).
An Alexander basket at the 18:37 mark of the second half gave Wingate its first lead at 36-35. Turner’s put-back made the score 38-35 at the 17:22 mark. Limestone answered with a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Michael Barrett (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a follow shot by sophomore forward
Jarrell Douglass (Leesburg, Fla.) to take the lead for good.
The contest was tied six times down the stretch. Two free throws by Wingate sophomore guard
Jaime Vaughn (McDonough, Ga.) tied the game for the last time at 60 with two minutes to play. On the next trip down the court, Clark made two charity tosses to give the LC Saints the advantage.
