Wingate survives UNC Pembroke 1-0 Tuesday night

The Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the Braves of UNC Pembroke 1-0 Tuesday night in Division II women’s soccer action at the WU Soccer Complex. Wingate remains undefeated, improving to 6-0-2 overall. UNC Pembroke falls to 5-3 overall. The Bulldogs open South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, hosting Newberry College at 4 p.m. UNC Pembroke returns to Peach Belt Conference action Saturday, visiting the University of Montevallo.

Junior midfielder Julie Zielinski (Erie, Pa.) scored the game’s only goal at the 80:05 mark, controlling a loose ball after a corner from sophomore midfielder Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) and netting her first goal of the year.

The first half was a defensive struggle, with each team managing only two shots while UNC Pembroke took the lone corner kick.

The Braves held a 5-4 edge in shots for the game, while Wingate had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. UNCP freshman midfielder Andrea Collen (Umea, Sweden) took all five shots for the Braves. Wingate freshman defender Kelly Moldenhauer (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with two shots, both of which were shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Catie Avery (East Hampton, Conn.) collected a pair of saves for the Bulldogs, who secure their sixth shutout of the year. Freshman goalkeeper Rea Segoviano (Jacksonville, N.C.) had a two saves for the Braves.
