Wingate ties #10 AASU 0-0 in two overtimes Wednesday

BOX SCORE

Savannah, Ga.----
The Wingate University women’s soccer team and number 10 Armstrong Atlantic State University played to a 0-0 draw Wednesday afternoon at the AASU Soccer Field. Wingate played to its third consecutive draw with the result today.

The Pirates (4-0-2) and the Bulldogs (2-1-3) played to a 2-2 draw last year at Wingate in the first-ever meeting between the two teams, but this contest was a defensive-minded match with stellar back line play and great keeping on both sides.

Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) made 13 saves on the Pirates’ 21 shots on the afternoon, including stopping a glancing header by Erin Holt with only six seconds remaining in the second overtime period, to preserve the shutout for the Bulldogs. AASU keeper Tracey Mitchell made five saves on her end of the field to also record the shutout.

AASU outshot the Bulldogs 21-10 for the match, including a 7-3 edge in the first half. Wingate’s best chance came on a header by sophomore midfielder Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.) in the 79th minute that was saved by Mitchell. The Pirates had a couple of one-on-one chances in the overtime periods, including one by Holt in the 97th minute, but Holt pushed it wide of the goal.

Holt, Andye Dawson and Nadima Skeff each had four shots in the match for the Pirates, while Wingate had four players with two shots apiece - Miranda, junior forward Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.), senior defender Terry Chandler (Charleston, S.C.) and junior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.).

The Bulldogs resume South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 25, visiting Tusculum College for a 2 p.m. contest. The Pirates also return to action Saturday, traveling to Georgia Southwestern State University for a 5 p.m. Peach Belt Conference match-up with the Hurricanes.
