Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s tennis teams both notched 9-0 wins over the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith in NCAA Division II tennis action Thursday afternoon. The Wingate men improve to 2-2 overall, while the women move to 4-1 on the season. The Johnson C. Smith men fall to 1-9 overall, while the women are 1-7 on the season.

The women dropped only two games in doubles action. The freshman duo of Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) notched an 8-0 win in number three doubles. Senior Kara Stasikelis (Greenville, S.C.) and sophomore Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) won 8-1 in number one doubles, while junior Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) and freshman Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) also won 8-1 in number two doubles.

Stasikelis, Poole and Ferguson notched victories in number one, four and six singles, respectively, without dropping a game. Evers notched a 6-1, 6-0 win in number two singles, while Winston won by the same score in number three singles. Sophomore Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) won 6-1, 6-1 in number five singles action.

The men dropped only one game in doubles action. Junior Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) and Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched an 8-0 win in number one singles. Senior Fernando Montemurro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) also notched an 8-0 win in number three doubles, while senior Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) and junior Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) won 8-1 in number two doubles.

The men did not drop a game in number four, five or six singles. Senior Louis Villarroel (Maraval, Trinidad), freshman Will Connolly (Charlottetown, Canada) and junior Greg Machado (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched the sweeps in four, five and six singles action, respectively. Lichtenstein won 6-1, 6-1 in number one singles, while Owen won by the same score in number two singles. Rathsam notched a 6-0, 6-1 win in number three singles.
