Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored two goals each in a pivotal fourth quarter as the Bulldogs defeated Florida Southern College 14-10 in Deep South Conference lacrosse action Friday at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
The contest was the home opener for Wingate (1-0 overall, 1-0 DSC). The FSC Mocs (1-1 overall, 1-1 DSC) drop their first game of the young season. The Bulldogs host Molloy (N.Y.) College Sunday at 1 p.m. Florida Southern continues its N.C. tour Sunday, visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College for a 12 noon encounter.
Lee led the Bulldogs with four goals. Watts had three scores, while sophomore attack
Colin O'Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) and senior attack
Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.) recorded two goals each. O'Donoghue scored the game-winner at the 8:57 mark of the fourth quarter, part of a 6-0 Wingate run to conclude the league contest. The Bulldogs outscored the Mocs 6-1 in the final frame.
FSC junior attack
Mat Thompson (Akwesasne, Ontario) led the visitors with three goals. Three teammates had two goals each. The road game was the second career head coaching contest for brand-new Florida Southern head coach
Marty Ward, a Limestone College All-American.
Wingate junior goalkeeper
Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) picked up the victory. In 60 minutes, he allowed 10 goals and recorded 15 saves. Florida Southern junior goalkeeper
Andrew Almansberger (Orlando, Fla.) took the loss. He posted eight saves and surrendered 14 goals. Almansberger also went the distance Friday.
