Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) posted a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Bulldogs used a huge second half spurt to defeat the Carson-Newman College Eagles 71-46 Saturday evening in Cuddy Arena. Turner compiled his statistics in 23 minutes.
Wingate improves to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in the South Atlantic Conference. Carson-Newman falls to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit Lenoir-Rhyne University Wednesday night at 8 p.m., while the Eagles venture to local rival Tusculum College at the same time.
Turner has 47 points, 17 rebounds, seven blocks, five steals and four assists in two Bulldog victories this week. He is shooting a torrid 21-of-28 (75 percent) for the week. The Myers Park High School product was the 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year.

Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) supported Turner’s efforts with 15 points and four assists. The All-SAC performer hit six-of-11 field goals and three-of-seven three-point field goals.
For the C-N Eagles, junior forward
Kevin Hare (Lexington, S.C.) had 20 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard
Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) added 10 points off the bench. Carson-Newman hit only 29.4 percent of its field goal attempts Saturday (15-of-51).
Eleven of the 12 Bulldogs in uniform found the scoring column. In the opening moments, Carson-Newman built an 11-5 lead, thanks to eight points from Hare. Wingate responded with a 29-9 run to take a 34-20 lead on a jumper by freshman forward
Jeffrey Parker (Madison, N.C.) at the 2:12 mark. Turner had 12 points in the 29-9 flurry. The Bulldogs took a 36-26 advantage to the halftime break.
Wingate started the second stanza with a 22-3 run to take a 58-29 advantage on two free throws by sophomore guard
Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) at 11:12 mark. Six different Bulldogs scored points in the flurry as Wingate took its largest lead of the contest.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Eagles 45-30. Eleven of Wingate’s 12 players had at least two rebounds. Bulldog sophomore guard
Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) had six rebounds to go with his five points. Carson-Newman senior center
Brandon Evans (Salem, Va.) had seven rebounds to lead the visitors. Evans added nine points and two blocked shots to his Saturday ledger.
Wingate converted 15 Carson-Newman turnovers into 22 points. The Bulldogs had 17 second-chance points to nine for the Eagles. Wingate had seven blocked shots, with Turner swatting four and Parker rejecting two. Turner led the Bulldogs in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots (four) and steals (three) on Saturday.
