Bulldogs open 2011 season with sweep over SAPC Knights

The Wingate University Bulldogs opened up the 2011 season by plating 22 runs, sweeping a doubleheader over the Knights of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The Bulldogs won by scores of 12-3 and 10-0, both five inning affairs, to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Knights fall to 0-5 overall.

Game #1
Wingate 12, St. Andrews 3 (5 innings)

Junior catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) was two-for-four with three RBI and two runs scored, while senior infielder Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) also drove home three runs. Freshman outfielder Ann Sautter (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had two hits and three runs scored, while junior shortstop Maureen Sandidge (Sarasota, Fla.) was two-for-three with two RBI and three runs scored.

The Knights struck first, plating three runs in the first inning. Freshman outfielder Tiffany Harris (Columbia, S.C.) provided the big blow with a two-run double to center to make it 3-0.

The Bulldogs answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie it. Barrineau got it started with an RBI single, while Chavis followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk. The third run scored when an infield popup was dropped, tying the game at three.

Wingate took the lead in the second on a two-run single from Barrineau. Chavis added a two-run single to make it 7-3. The ‘Dogs added four more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Sandidge. An RBI double to left from freshman pinch-hitter Jessica Walsh (Columbia, S.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 12-3 lead.

Freshman right-hander Ashley Brown (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) got the win in her collegiate debut. She pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing only one hit while striking out five, improving to 1-0 on the year. Junior right-hander Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) took the loss, allowing 12 runs (two earned) on nine hits in four innings of work.

Game #2
Wingate 10, St. Andrews 0 (5 innings)

Walsh was three-for-four with three RBI and two runs scored to spark the Wingate offense in the second game, while sophomore first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) added a homer and three RBI. Senior outfielder Jessica McCraw (Waxhaw, N.C.) was three-for-four with two runs scored at the top of the Wingate offense.

The Bulldogs got on the board early, getting an RBI single from Walsh in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Chavis scored the second run of the game on an error, while Sandidge drove home the third run of the game by reaching on an error by the left fielder.

Wingate added three more runs in the fourth, starting on a double steal, allowing McCraw to score from third. Walsh added another RBI single, while Chavis capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single.

Loudermilt finished the game in style in the fifth, blasting her first homer of the year over the left field fence, a three-run shot to give the ‘Dogs a 10-0 victory.

Senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) got the win for the Bulldogs, improving to 1-0 on the year. She tossed four innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven without walking a batter. Sophomore right-hander Nancy Crawley (Cheraw, S.C.) pitched the final inning, allowing one hit while striking out three. Disque took the loss for the Knights, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, Feb. 16, hosting Francis Marion University at 1 p.m. St. Andrews hosts Georgia College Saturday at 2 p.m.
