#6 Lander advances past Wingate 86-54 in NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Friday

Morrow, Ga.----Lander University junior center Kaylyn Small (Augusta, Ga.) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the second-seeded Bearcats defeated seventh-seeded Wingate University 86-54 Friday in the quarterfinals of 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional hosted by Clayton State University.

Bearcat junior guard Brianna Webb (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) swished a game-high 18 points and connected on four three-pointers for Lander (28-3 overall), who will play third-seeded USC Aiken in the semifinals Saturday at 5 p.m. Wingate concludes the 2010-11 season 19-11 overall.

The number six team in the current USA Today ESPN Division II top 25 coaches’ poll, Lander set a new school record with its 28th win of the season. The Bearcats used a balanced attack with 10 players playing between 15 and 25 minutes.

Lander junior guard Jasmine Judge (Augusta, Ga.) matched Webb with four three-pointers as the Bearcats made 10-of-26 launched attempts from behind the arc. Lander shot 46.3 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three-point distance. The Bulldogs were held to 39.2 percent accuracy from the field and 30.8 percent accuracy from long distance.

First team All-South Atlantic Conference selection Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) paced Wingate with 15 points. Senior guard CC Brooks (Mount Holly, N.C.) tacked on 11 points, three rebounds and two steals in her final appearance in the blue-and-gold. Sophomore forward Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.) led the Bulldogs with six rebounds.

Lander used a pair of 13-0 runs to pull out to a 47-22 halftime advantage. All 10 Bearcats who played in the first half scored. Lander connected on six-of-15 three-pointers (40 percent) during the opening stanza.

After trading baskets in the first 90 seconds, the Bearcats scored 13 consecutive points. The flurry featured a trio of made three-pointers by Webb, junior forward Rachelle Rasley (Richmond, Va.) and junior guard Mukia Myrick (Columbus, Ga.). Lander made 52.8 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes to take a 47-22 cushion into the halftime locker room.
 
The Bearcats maintained a 20-plus point advantage throughout the second half, building a 37-point gap five times before coasting into the second round by 32 points. Lander collected a 44-28 rebounding surplus. The Bearcat reserves outscored the Bulldog bench 42-21. Lander scored 30 points off 18 Wingate turnovers.

Myrick handed out seven assists, junior guard Ciara Lyons (Augusta, Ga.) dished out six dimes and junior guard Brittni Johnson (Athens, Ga.) supplied five helpers as the Bearcats tallied 25 assists on 35 made field goals. Wingate sophomore guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) had three assists for the Bulldogs. Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Shannon McKever (Florence, S.C.) scored eight points off the bench for Lander.
