#2 Limestone defeats Wingate 16-4 in inaugural Justin Graham Gill Memorial Lacrosse game

Wingate, N.C.----The Limestone College men’s lacrosse team bolted to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, collecting a 16-4 NCAA Division II victory over Wingate University Wednesday night at the Wingate Soccer Complex field. The Saints are the number two team in the USILA top 12 poll.

Limestone is 6-0 overall, while the Bulldogs are 4-4 overall. The contest was the inaugural Justin Graham Gill Memorial Lacrosse game at Wingate University. The Bulldogs host Pfeiffer University Saturday at 2 p.m. (Irwin Belk Stadium), while Limestone opens its 2011 home campaign Saturday against Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey College at 1 p.m.

The Saints had nine different players score at least one goal. Sophomore attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia) topped the charts with three goals and two assists. Four players scored one goal each for the host Bulldogs. Wingate junior attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) had one goal and one assist.

Loewen had one goal and two assists in the opening 6-0 flurry. An EMO goal by Limestone senior attack Thomas Langan (Potomac, Md.) completed the run at the 8:37 mark of the second quarter. Lee got Wingate on the board one minute later on an assist from sophomore midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

Limestone responded with three unanswered goals to take a 9-1 advantage two minutes into the third quarter. Loewen’s tally at the 13:08 mark finished the mini-run. Bulldog sophomore midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) answered with an unassisted goal at the 11:33 plateau, but Wingate would not score again until early in the fourth quarter.

Wingate junior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took the loss, allowing 15 goals and recording 15 saves in 54-plus minutes Wednesday. Limestone junior goalie Steve Gartelman (Seaford, N.Y.) earned the victory, making six saves and yielding four goals in 55-plus minutes of action.

Limestone capitalized on all four of its man-up opportunities and did not allow a goal in six man-down situations. The Saints held a 46-25 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs won 13 of the 24 face-offs. Freshman midfielder Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) was successful on eight-of-15 face-off attempts.
