Wingate men and women pick up SAC wins at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----The 39th-ranked Wingate University women’s tennis team notched a 9-0 win over the Catawba College Indians, while the 38th-ranked men’s team picked up a 6-3 win over the Indians in South Atlantic Conference tennis action Wednesday afternoon. The women win their 10th straight match, and improve to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the men improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The men had to rally for their win, after dropping two doubles matches. Junior Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) and senior Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) notched an 8-4 win in number two doubles for Wingate’s lone victory before singles action.
 
The Bulldogs won five of the six singles contests. Lichtenstein won 6-4, 6-1 in number one singles, while junior Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) collected a 6-2, 7-5 win in number two singles. Junior Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won 6-2, 6-2 in number three singles, while the reigning SAC Player of the Week Patchell won 6-1, 6-4 in number four singles. Senior Fernando Montemurro (Sao Pualo, Brazil) picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory in number five singles for the Bulldogs.
 
The women’s team dropped only seven games in doubles action. Senior Kara Stasikelis (Greenville, S.C.) and sophomore Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) teamed for an 8-1 win in number one doubles. Freshman Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and junior Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) notched an 8-4 win in number two doubles, improving to a perfect 11-0 on the season as a doubles team. Freshman Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.), the reigning SAC Player of the week, teamed with freshman Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) for an 8-2 win in number three doubles.
 
The ‘Dogs were just as impressive in singles, going the afternoon without dropping a set. Stasikelis won 6-2, 6-3 in number one singles, while Evers won 6-2, 6-2 in number two singles. Winston picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win in number three singles. Poole and Ferguson had identical 6-3, 6-2 wins in number four and five singles, respectively, while sophomore Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) won 6-2, 6-4 in number six singles. Poole wins for the 12th straight time in singles action, and is yet to drop a match in her collegiate career.
  
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, hosting Tusculum at 2 p.m. The two teams will host Carson-Newman Saturday at 12 p.m.
