Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University tennis teams continued their solid play, sweeping a South Atlantic Conference twin bill over Mars Hill College Friday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex. Both the number 38 Wingate men and the number 39 Bulldog women won by identical 7-2 scores to remain undefeated in league play.

The Wingate men are 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Mars Hill men are 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. The Bulldog women are 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Mars Hill women are 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. Wingate hosts Brevard College for a 12 noon SAC twin bill Saturday.

#38 Wingate men 7, Mars Hill 2

Bulldog junior Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) was one of four Wingate men to take two victories Friday. He started his day by teaming with senior Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) to defeat Mars Hill’s Guilherme Lima and Stevan Stankovic 8-2 in the number two doubles match. Lichtenstein outlasted Lion sophomore Lucas Simm 6-1, 7-5 at the number one singles flight to clinch the victory for the hosts.

Wingate junior Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) improved his career singles record to 42-3 overall with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lima in the number three singles match. Rathsam and classmate Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) defeated Simm and Enrico Patriarca 8-5 in the number one doubles match. Bulldog senior Fernando Montemurro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) celebrated his birthday with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Stankovic in the number five singles match.

#39 Wingate women 7, Mars Hill 2

In keeping with the birthday theme, Wingate sophomore Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) celebrated her birthday with two victories for the hosts. Ferguson’s singles victory clinched the triumph for the Bulldogs, giving Wingate its 15th dual match victory of the season.

Ferguson and senior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) outlasted Mars Hill’s Erika Pinate and
Anna Rickenbaker 9-7 in the number one doubles match. Ferguson defeated Jacqueline Rouquet 6-2, 7-5 in the number five singles match, giving Wingate its fifth point.

Ferguson and freshmen teammates Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) won two matches each. Winston and Poole collected an 8-5 triumph over Ona Jane and Mary Nelson in the number three doubles match. Winston defeated Jane 6-2, 6-0 at the number three singles flight, while Poole edged Rickenbaker (in three sets) at the number four singles flight. Poole prevailed 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
