Banner Elk, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore attack Colin O’Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) had four goals and an assist, while sophomore midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) added four goals to lead the Bulldogs past the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 14-4 in NCAA Division II lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. Wingate improves to 5-6 overall, while Lees-McRae falls to 0-8 on the season.
Kendall opened up the scoring for the Bulldogs in the first period, while a goal from junior attack Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) gave Wingate a 3-2 lead going into the second frame.
The ‘Dogs would dominate the second, out-scoring Lees-McRae 5-0 to take an 8-2 lead into intermission. Sophomore midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and junior midfield Travis Barrett (Andover, N.J.) netted the first two goals of the period, while Kendall followed with two straight to put Wingate on top by five. O’Donoghue scored with 1:17 remaining in the half to push the lead to six.
Bayliss scored 10 seconds into the third, giving the Bulldogs their seventh consecutive goal and a 9-2 advantage. O’Donoghue followed with a pair of goals, while a goal from Watts with nine seconds remaining in the third made it 12-3.
Barrett assisted on O’Donoghue’s fourth goal of the afternoon 4:28 into the final stanza, while Kendall netted Wingate’s final goal of the afternoon at the 8:31 mark.
Junior goalie Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) racked up 14 saves for the Bulldogs, allowing only four goals on 29 shots faced.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, traveling to St. Andrews for a 4 p.m. start.
