All-Deep South Conference teams include six Wingate student-athletes

Wingate, N.C.----Five Wingate University student-athletes were named to the 2011 All-Deep South Conference team, league officials announced Monday. One player received honorable mention laurels. Sophomore midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and senior defense Matt Ramsey (Philadelphia, Pa.) were named to the first team.

Ramsey is a repeat performer, as he received All-DSC honors in 2010. Sophomore attack Colin O’Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.), junior midfield Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) and junior goalkeeper Dan Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) received second team laurels.

Watts ranks third on the Bulldog charts with 22 goals. He has eight assists on his ledger. Watts’ 30 points are also third on the Wingate team. Ramsey led the Bulldogs with 23 caused turnovers after topping the Bulldog charts with 19 caused turnovers in 2010. Ramsey has scooped 39 ground balls this year, fourth on the Wingate club.

O’Donoghue leads the Bulldogs with his 51 points. He is also the top dog in assists with 22. O’Donoghue shares the team lead in goals (with classmate David Lee) with 29. Bayliss has 12 goals and seven assists on the year, while collecting 35 ground balls and causing six turnovers. Dlugozima is second in the DSC with 156 saves; his save percentage is .567. Dlugozima posted a stellar 7.93 goals against average in league games, second on the DSC charts.

Wingate senior defense Adam Jones (Pleasant Garden, N.C.) was named honorable mention All-DSC as a specialist. A team captain, Jones has 45 ground balls. His GB total is second on the team to Dlugozima’s 64. Jones is a pre-med and Chemistry Business major with a 3.76 GPA.

Mars Hill College senior attack Tyler Farmer is the 2011 Deep South Conference Player of the Year. Saint Leo University’s Matt Obermeyer is the league’s Freshman of the Year. Florida Southern College coach Marty Ward and Lenoir-Rhyne University mentor Greg Paradine earn co-Coach of the Year honors.

Wingate University is ranked number three among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the 2000’s with 38 honorees during this millennium. Only Pittsburg State (Kan.) University and Truman State (Mo.) University have produced more Academic All-America® honorees during this time period. Wingate’s 47 Academic All-America® honorees (lifetime) is tops among all SAC schools.
