Wingate men and women win 8-1 at Catawba

The Wingate University men’s and women’s tennis teams both picked up 8-1 wins at Catawba College Wednesday afternoon in NCAA Division II tennis action. Both Wingate teams are 1-0 on the season.

The Wingate women swept through doubles action, getting 8-6 wins in number one and number two doubles. Junior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) teamed for an 8-6 win at number one, while sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) won by the same margin at number two doubles. Sophomores Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Sarah Martin (Chardon, Ohio) added an 8-3 win in number three doubles to make it 3-0 heading to singles play.

Thomas won 6-1, 6-1 in number two singles, while Winston added a 6-3, 6-3 win at number three singles. Ferguson won 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 (10-8) in number four singles, while Williams rallied for a victory in number five singles after dropping the opening set, winning the tie-breaker 12-10. Senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) also rallied after dropping the opening set, winning the third set tie-breaker 11-9.

The Wingate men won two of the three doubles matches on Wednesday. Sophomore Diego Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico) and freshman Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) won 8-3 in number one doubles. Freshmen Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) and Sebastian Hall (Lorrach, Germany) followed with a 9-8 win in number two doubles, wining the tie-breaker 11-9.

Martinez won 6-2, 6-1 in number one singles, while Hennis added a 6-1, 6-3 win in number two singles. Cancelado won 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles, with Hall winning 6-3, 6-4 at number four singles. Sophomore Josh Eardley (Newcastle, England) added a 6-4, 6-3 win at number five singles, while freshman Westin Bennett (Calgary, Alberta) rounded out the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win in number six singles.

Both teams are back in action Thursday, hosting Pfeiffer at 3 p.m.
