Bulldogs rally past UNCP 4-2 for eighth straight victory

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 in the first five minutes Wednesday afternoon, but scored four unanswered goals to defeat the visiting Braves of UNC Pembroke 4-2 in NCAA Division II women’s soccer action. The Bulldogs win their eighth straight, improving to 11-1-1 overall. The Braves fall to 7-5-2 on the season.

UNCP wasted no time getting on the board, as sophomore forward Sherrie Gessin (Rochester, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the year two minutes into the contest. Senior forward Ashley Anctil (Jacksonville, N.C.) assisted on the play.

The Braves pushed the advantage to two just two minutes later when freshman forward Rae-Shawna Campbell (Wilmington, N.C.) scored her eighth goal of the year, getting assists from freshman midfielder Julia Nytorp (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and sophomore midfielder Amalia Arvidsson (Boras, Sweden).

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 10th minute when senior forward Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) got behind the defense and netted her fifth goal of the year to make it 2-1. Junior midfielder Chelsey Horan (Waxhaw, N.C.) had the lead pass on the play, while sophomore forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C) had the touch to get Forza open, as she scored a goal for the third straight game.

Wingate tied the match 1:34 before halftime when freshman forward Kalyn Meosky (Hickory, N.C.) scored her fourth goal of the year of a cross from junior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.).

The Bulldogs took the lead took the lead 11:34 into the second half when Montgomery netted her nation’s-best 17th goal of the season off a feed from Forza. It is the sixth game-winner this season for Montgomery, who has now registered a point in eight straight contests.

Wingate added some insurance in the 75th minute when Forza beat a pair of defenders and found the back of the net for the second time on the night, with Montgomery registering her fourth assist of the season.

Wingate out-shot the Braves 15-12 in the match, holding an 11-4 edge in the second half. Both teams had seven shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had five saves for the Bulldogs. Junior Britney Bennett (Seminole, Fla.) had three saves for the Braves.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 4:30 p.m. The Crusaders host Young Harris Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
