Turner leads Wingate’s dominant performance against Golden Bulls

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) had 19 points and a career-high 19 rebounds Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a 73-61 victory over Johnson C. Smith University in NCAA Division II basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Golden Bulls by 24 on the afternoon as they improve to 5-3 on the season. Johnson C. Smith falls to 4-2 overall.

Turner pulled down a career-best 12 offensive rebounds on the day, adding three assists and three blocked shots. Junior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) added 15 points and six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass. Senior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had 15 points and six rebounds after being honored for scoring 1,000 career points in a pregame ceremony. Junior forward Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) contributed eight points and five rebounds on the afternoon.

“I thought the effort plays were the difference in the game,” head coach Brian Good says. “Any time you get 26 offensive rebounds you know the guys are playing really hard. I thought it was one of the best rebounding efforts that we have ever had here.”

Senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, N.C.) had 23 points to lead the Johnson C. Smith attack. Parks entered the game ranking second in NCAA Division II, averaging 27.6 points per contest. Sophomore center Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, Ohio) added 16 points and five rebounds for the Golden Bulls.

Johnson C. Smith jumped out to a 7-2 lead, getting five points from Parks in the early spurt. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Turner and Turman each had dunks in the spurt, while Matilus capped it with a three at the 14:34 mark. A Matilus layup was followed by another Turman dunk, making it 21-12 with 5:44 remaining in the half.

A pair of free throws from Trevin Parks, followed by a layup from Emilio Parks trimmed the lead to five a minute later. Turner answered with a tip-in, while a pair of free throws and a jumper from Parker pushed the advantage back to nine. A rebound and jumper in the paint from Turner gave Wingate a 31-20 advantage at intermission. Turner already had a double-double at halftime, registering 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Golden Bulls came out on fire in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to trim Wingate’s advantage to three at the 18:54 mark. Freshman guard Joshua Linson (San Antonio, Texas) got it started with a four-point play, while Emilio Parks capped it with a jumper. Wingate had the emphatic response, going on a 15-2 run to take a 16-point lead. Matilus started it with a jumper, while Turner followed with a tip-in and a three-point play. Matilus knocked down a triple, while a Parker jumper and a triple from senior guard Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) made it 46-30 with 14:27 to go.

A jumper from Trevin Parks trimmed the lead to 13 at the 13:29 mark, but Matilus answered with a bucket while Parker added two free throws to give Wingate an 18-point lead. Turner added another jumper, while a pair of free throws from senior forward Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) gave Wingate its largest lead of the game at 68-48 with 4:25 to go. The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs shot 38.9 percent from the field, hitting five-of-18 shots from three-point range (27.8 percent). The Golden Bulls shot 42.6 percent from the field, hitting three-of-19 shots from beyond the arc (15.8 percent). The Bulldogs held a 53-29 advantage in rebounding on the day, including a 26-7 edge in offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs piled up 32 second chance points, compared to 10 from the Golden Bulls.

The Bulldogs return to action Dec. 19, traveling to Mount Olive for a 7 p.m. start. Johnson C. Smith returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Claflin for a 7:30 p.m. start.
