Falcons outslug Wingate 13-8 as teams combine for 10 homers

The Pfeiffer University Falcons had two three-run homers, along with three solo shots en route to a 13-8 victory over the Bulldogs of Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Bulldogs had four solo homers and a two-run shot on the afternoon. Pfeiffer improves to 6-6 overall, while Wingate falls to 8-6 on the season.
 
Sophomore outfielder Kevin Price (Asheville, N.C.) had two homers and six RBI to lead the Pfeiffer attack. Sophomore catcher Justin Harris (Albany, N.Y.) was five-for-five with a double, homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Senior infielder Preston Lyon (Gastonia, N.C.) added a four-for-five day, while junior outfielder Jacob Yates (Blairs, Va.) had a homer, two RBI and three runs scored for the Falcons.
 
Freshman infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) also had a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs. Senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.), redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) each added solo homers.
 
Pfeiffer wasted no time getting on the board, with Yates leading off the game with a homer to right. Harris added a solo shot to left two batters later to make it 2-0. The Falcons added five more runs in the second, with Price delivering the big blow, blasting a three-run shot to right to give Pfeiffer a 7-0 lead. Yates added an RBI single in the third to push the lead to eight.
 
Wingate got on the board in the third when Godinez started the frame with his first career homer, a solo shot to left to make it 8-1. Yeung blasted his second homer of the season in the fourth, a solo shot to right to make it a six-run game. Vazquez added his fourth homer of the year two batters later, making it 8-3.
 
A solo homer from sophomore infielder Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, N.C.) in the fifth pushed the lead back to six. Karr answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame, his fourth of the year, making it 9-4.
 
Pfeiffer added four more runs in the seventh, with Price again providing the big blow, blasting his second three-run homer of the afternoon to give the Falcons a 13-4 advantage.
 
Allison got Wingate to within seven with his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the eighth, getting an RBI groundout from Godinez, followed by an RBI double from freshman catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) to make the final margin 13-8.
 
Freshman left-hander Keith Little (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win in relief for the Falcons, allowing two runs in an inning of work, improving to 1-0 on the year. Senior right-hander Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. He allowed eight runs on eight hits in two innings of work.
 
The Bulldogs return to action this weekend, hosting a three-game series against Catawba College. The series starts Friday night at 6 p.m., while the teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. Pfeiffer hosts Erskine College Friday at 2 p.m.
