Davidson blanks Wingate 7-0 Friday night

Davidson, N.C.----Davidson College dropped only one set en route to a 7-0 men’s tennis victory over Wingate University Friday night at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center on the Davidson campus. The NCAA Division I Wildcats are 1-2 overall, while the 2011 South Atlantic Conference regular season champion Bulldogs are 2-2 overall.

The Wildcats dropped only nine games to grab the doubles point (in NCAA Division I, doubles counts for one point only). At the number four singles flight, Wingate senior Drew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) dropped a tough three-set match to Davidson freshman Nicky Kunz 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Bulldog freshman Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) pushed Wildcat senior Calum Gee to the limit before falling 7-5, 7-5 at the number three spot.

Wingate’s Sunday home match versus North Georgia has been postponed due to weather concerns. A make-up date will be announced next week. The Bulldogs host Limestone Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. The Davidson Wildcats return to the courts the same day, hosting Richmond at 9 a.m. and Presbyterian at 4 p.m.
