Saint Leo (Fla.) claims 13-9 victory over Wingate Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----Sophomore attack Matt Obermeyer scored five goals to lead the Saint Leo Lions to a 13-9 Deep South Conference lacrosse victory over Wingate University at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on Saturday afternoon. Wingate is 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while Saint Leo improves to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the DSC (NCAA box score).

Obermeyer’s man-up goal with 2:23 to play in the third quarter after Wingate junior midfielder Brandon Lowstetter was called for a push broke a 7-7 tie. The Lions added two goals in the span of two minutes, with Obermeyer scoring again with 47 seconds left in the quarter and junior midfielder Ray Ferrara’s man-up goal with 14:10 to play in the game.

Saint Leo added two more goals in the next four minutes to take a 12-7 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Junior attack Derek Watts scored the final of his team-leading three goals with 2:07 to play, with Obermeyer adding another with 91 seconds left. Senior attack David Lee scored his 21st goal of the season with 1:04 to play on a man-up, but Saint Leo controlled possession for the rest of the game.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead on freshman midfielder Chase Watts’ first collegiate goal 1:53 into the game. Saint Leo answered with the first of Obermeyer’s five goals with 11:45 to play in the quarter. The Watts brothers would score back-to-back goals, with the younger Watts scoring his second with at the 11:31 mark of the first quarter and older brother Derek scoring his first of the game with 10:31 to go in the opening frame.

Following a SLU team (own) goal to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead, the Lions roared back with goals from Obermeyer, Ryan Burke, Alex Monteferrante and George Proechel to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Wingate senior Bryan Bayliss scored his 13th goal of the season with 13:37 left in the opening half and Derek Watts added his second of the game at 8:48 to give the ‘Dogs a 6-5 halftime lead.

Wingate will hit the road on Wednesday afternoon, making the short trip to Pfeiffer for a 4 p.m. game. Saint Leo visits Tampa Tuesday for a 7 p.m. DSC game.
