'Dogs break eight school records on day two of 49er Classic

Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s track and field teams completed a solid weekend Saturday, as the Bulldogs broke eight school records at the Charlotte 49er Classic. Wingate student-athletes broke 15 records during the two-day event at UNCC (full results).

For the Wingate women, the 4x400 meter relay team of sophomores Brittany Sturdivant and JaLisha Little and freshmen Mckenzi Mocilnikar and Lauren Calhoun claimed eighth place with a new high-water mark of 4:03.80. Calhoun, Sturdivant and Little teamed with sophomore Kellen Williams to finish ninth in the 4x100 meter relay. The quartet’s school record time was 49.40.
 
Sophomore Keeley Wood and freshman Austin Hoffman both broke the old school record in the 3K. Wood is now the pacesetter, as she finished 11th with a time of 11:03.05. Freshman Christina Matheny recorded an 11th place finish in the javelin, posting a school-record toss of 34.76 meters.
 
Sophomore Candra Mathis and freshman Shannon Daniels placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the triple jump. Mathis leaped 10.86 meters, while Daniels jumped 10.63 meters. Mathis is the returning regional champion in the triple jump.
 
The Wingate men excelled in relays as well.  The Bulldog 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Michael Nelli and freshmen Andrew Fuquay, Jacob Burnette and Cole Henderson was sixth with a school-record time of 42.38. Henderson and Nelli teamed with freshmen Scott Pullen and Corey Silvestri to post a school-best 3:23.53 in the 4x400 meter relay event, giving Wingate 11th place.
 
Sophomore Steve Hammond finished fourth in the Steeplechase with a new school-record time of 9:44.50. Classmate Lamont Reaves broke his own school record in the 800 meters, running a 1:59.49. In addition, sophomore Astute Evans was 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 13.61 meters.
 
Next on the horizon for the Bulldogs is the VertKlasse Meeting Saturday, March 24. The annual event is hosted by High Point University.
