High Point, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore Jabrea Greene (Winston-Salem, N.C.) made an impressive return to her Piedmont Triad stomping grounds Saturday, claiming the silver medal in the 100 meter hurdles (participation division) at the VertKlasse Meeting. The annual event is hosted by High Point University at Dick Wert Stadium.
 
Greene put a 16.06 on the scoreboard, while Wake Forest’s Julie McCauley recorded a 16.05 to finish first by 0.01 seconds. Greene defeated NCAA Division II rivals from Lenoir-Rhyne, Belmont Abbey, Saint Augustine’s, Concord and Lake Erie.
 
Later in the day, Greene cleared 1.52 meters in the performance division high jump competition, good enough for seventh place. Freshman Christina Matheny (Akron, Ohio) and sophomore Carly Candell (Annapolis, Md.) also recorded top 10 finishes in the high jump Saturday.
 
The Bulldog women also had a solid day in the relays. The 4x100 meter relay team claimed sixth place (50.36), while the 4x400 quartet were eighth (4:07.95). Sophomores JaLisha Little (Charlotte, N.C.) and Brittany Sturdivant (Weddington, N.C.) and freshman Lauren Calhoun (Fayetteville, N.C.) ran both races. Sophomore Kellen Williams (Matthews, N.C.) ran the anchor leg for the 4x100 team, while freshman Mckenzi Mocilnikar (Marshallville, Ohio) ran the third leg for the 4x400 team.
 
In other performance division events, Calhoun was 12th in the 400 meters (57.75). Mocilnikar was 14th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:10.04), while Little was 15th in the 100 meters (12.99). Wingate freshman Austin Hoffman (Valdese, N.C.) was eighth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (13:30.19), while classmate Shannon Daniels (State College, Pa.) was 12th in the triple jump (10.15 meters). Bulldog junior Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) was 14th in the same event (9.62 meters).
 
In the participation division, Williams and Sturdivant were fifth and ninth, respectively, in the 100 meters (13.03, 13.22). Calhoun was fifth in the 200 meters (26.33). Sophomore Tiana Barnes (Winchester, Calif.) was seventh in the 800 meters (2:28.80) and 14th in her signature 1500 meters (5:07.45). Classmate Courtney Rainey (Concord, N.C.) was 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.48. Daniels and Forza were seventh and ninth, respectively, in the long jump (4.75 meters, 4.65 meters). Candell recorded a seventh-place finish in the javelin. Her throw covered 19.30 meters.
 
For the Wingate men, freshman Tyler Lee (Melbourne, Fla.) won the 400 meter hurdles at the VertKlasse Meeting Saturday. Lee posted a 56.38 in the participation division, defeating hurdlers from Davidson, Mount Olive, Concord (W.Va.) and Lake Erie (Ohio).
 
Lee claimed eighth place in the 110 meter hurdles (performance division) with a time of 15.04. Both times were personal-bests for Lee. In other men’s performance events, freshman Cole Henderson (Elon, N.C.) helped the Bulldogs claim four top 11 finishes. Individually, Henderson was fifth in the 100 meters (11.03) and 11th in the 200 meters (22.25).
 
In the relays, Henderson ran a leg on both the 4x100 (second, 42.56) and 4x400 (fifth, 3:23.59) events. In the 4x100, he ran the anchor leg with sophomore Michael Nelli (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshmen Jacob Burnette (Charlotte, N.C.) and Andrew Fuquay (Lewisville, N.C.). Henderson got things started in the 4x400 race, as he was followed by freshman Scott Pullen (Roswell, Ga.), sophomore Lamont Reaves (Vass, N.C.) and freshman Corey Silvestri (Charlotte, N.C.).
 
Wingate sophomore Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) was fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:32.10. The top three finishers represented Duke (first and second) and Dartmouth. Hammond is a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference cross country performer for the Bulldogs.
 
Sophomores Astute Evans (High Point, N.C.) and Darion Ryans (Boynton Beach, Fla.) were third and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump. Evans leaped 13.71 meters, while Ryans covered 12.44 meters. In the high jump, freshman George Williams (Fayetteville, N.C.) was eighth with a leap of 1.82 meters. In the long jump, sophomore Jonathan Smith (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was 11th with a jump of 6.10 meters.
 
In other participation division events, Burnette was second in the 100 meters (11.11) and eighth in the 200 (22.96). Nelli was third in the 100 (11.28), while Fuquay was 10th in the 200 (23.00). Sophomore Danny Blue (Baltimore, Md.) was fourth in the long jump (6.02 meters), while Ryans was sixth in the same event (5.57 meters). Reaves was fourth in the 800 meters (1:58.24), while Silvestri claimed seventh place in the 400 meters (50.90).
 
The next event for the Wingate track and field teams is Friday and Saturday, as the Bulldogs venture to North Carolina State University for the Raleigh Relays.
