Boone, N.C.----Wingate University freshman Lauren Calhoun (Fayetteville, N.C.) put her name in the record books Friday, earning an NCAA Division II provisional time in the 400 meters at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the Appalachian State University campus. Calhoun and her Bulldog teammates competed in the Appalachian Open, establishing five school records on a beautiful spring day (view full results at this link).

Calhoun’s provisional time is the first in Wingate’s NCAA track and field history. The Pine Forest High School graduate finished second in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 55.37. She was second (by 6/100 of a second) to ASU sophomore Breahna Morrison (Waxhaw, N.C.), who broke the tape at 55.31.

Bulldog sophomores JaLisha Little (58.13, Charlotte, N.C.), Kellen Williams (1:00.46, Matthews, N.C.), Katie Brown (1:03.40, Chesnee, S.C.) and Brittany Brown (1:09.03, Cheasapeake, Va.) finished fourth, fifth, sixth and 10th, respectively, in the 400 meters. Brittany Brown’s time shattered her personal-best by six seconds.

Wingate freshman Mckenzi Mocilnikar (Marshallville, Ohio) was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a school-record time of 1:09.24. Classmate DaMonique McClure (Charlotte, N.C.) achieved a school-record hammer throw of 35.71 meters. She was third in the event.

The Bulldog women tied two school records:  freshman Christina Matheny (Akron, Ohio) in the high jump (1.62 meters) and the 4x100 meter relay team (48.86). Both Matheny and the relay quartet finished second in their respective events.

Wingate’s women earned one gold medal with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. The victorious Bulldogs posted a time of 4:03.79. Bulldog sophomore Candra Mathis (Harrisburg, N.C.) was second in the long jump with a leap of 5.01 meters. Mathis was the top Division II long jumper, as she bested junior teammate Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario), three Lees-McRae leapers and one Lenoir-Rhyne jumper.

Forza had a nice day, placing third in the long jump (4.56 meters) and third in the triple jump (8.90 meters). Williams was third in the 200 meters (27.03), while sophomore teammates Keeley Wood (Sanford, N.C.) and Jabrea Greene (Winston-Salem, N.C.) were third in the 1500 meters (5:04.52) and the 100 meter hurdles (16.15), respectively.

The Applachian Open was Wingate’s final tune-up prior to the Southeast Regional meet Saturday, April 20 at Lenoir-Rhyne. Friday’s meet was a homecoming for Wingate throws coach Whitney Smyre, who earned multiple All-SoCon honors during a distinguished ASU Mountaineer career.
