Wingate women win Southeast Regional meet Saturday

Bulldog men earn second place in two-day event

Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s track and field team won the Southeast Regional meet Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bulldogs collected 178 points. UNC Pembroke (159) and Anderson (S.C.) (141) were second and third, respectively. The Wingate men (138.5 points) finished second behind Mars Hill (154). UNC Pembroke claimed third place (128.5 points).
 
For the Wingate women, freshman Lauren Calhoun (Fayetteville, N.C.) won the 400 meters. Sophomore JaLisha Little (Charlotte, N.C.) was third in the 400 meters. Sophomore Candra Mathis (Concord, N.C.) won the long jump, with freshman teammate Shannon Daniels (State College, Pa.) claiming second place. Sophomore Keeley Wood (Sanford, N.C.) won the 5000 meters. She was fourth in the 1500 meters.
 
Wingate sophomore speedster Kellen Williams (Matthews, N.C.) collected two top-three performances. She was third in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 meters. In the 100, Little was fourth and junior Ashley Fleetwood (Knightdale, N.C.) was fifth. In the 200, sophomore Tiffaney McFadden Craft (Florence, S.C.) was seventh.
 
In the 400 meter hurdles, Bulldog freshman Mckenzi Mocilnikar (Marshallville, Ohio) was second. In the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Rachael Winterling (Weaverville, N.C.) and freshman Austin Hoffman (Valdese, N.C.) were third and fourth, respectively. Sophomore thrower Sammantha Schruise (Stony Point, N.C.) was fifth in the shot put.
 
The Bulldog women made a statement in the relay events. The 4x400 meter relay quartet finished first. Members of the gold-medal group are Little, Mocilnikar, Calhoun and sophomore Courtney Rainey (Concord, N.C.). The 4x100 meter relay team (Little, Calhoun, Fleetwood, Williams) earned a silver medal.
           
For the Wingate men, freshman Tyler Lee (Melbourne, Fla.) won the 110 meter high hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles. He joins women’s jumper Candra Mathis (triple jump, long jump) as a Bulldog individual double winner at the Southeast Regional event. Sophomore Astute Evans (High Point, N.C.) was fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles, while freshman Ronald Brown, Jr. (Jackson, N.J.) was third in the 400 hurdles.
 
Bulldog sophomore Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) had a huge Saturday, as he won the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase and finished third in the 5000 meters. Sophomore Biniam Ateka Belachew (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) was fifth in the men’s 5000 meters. On Friday, Belachew was fifth in the men’s 10,000 meters.
 
In the sprints, freshman Cole Henderson (Elon, N.C.) and sophomore Michael Nelli (Charlotte, N.C.) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 meters. Freshman Jacob Burnette (Charlotte, N.C.) was fourth in the 100 meters, while Henderson was sixth. Wingate’s 4x100 meter relay team recorded a fourth-place performance. Relay team members include Henderson, Nelli, Burnette and freshman Andrew Fuquay (Lewisville, N.C.).
 
Wingate freshman Corey Silvestri (Charlotte, N.C.) was second in the 400 meters. Sophomore Lamont Reaves (Vass, N.C.) was fourth in the 800 meters. Sophomore thrower Jesse Lavelle (Greensboro, N.C.) completed a great weekend with a third-place finish in the men’s shot put. On Friday night, Lavelle finished second in the men’s hammer throw.
