Spartanburg, S.C.----The Wingate University track and field teams competed in the second annual Terrier Relays Saturday. The event was hosted by Wofford College on the Spartanburg High School campus. The Wingate women continue to improve in the relay races. The Bulldogs won the 4x100 meter relay with a school-record time of 48.85. Wingate’s victorious quartet includes junior
Ashley Fleetwood (Knightdale, N.C.), sophomores
JaLisha Little (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Kellen Williams (Matthews, N.C.) and freshman
Lauren Calhoun (Fayetteville, N.C.). The Bulldogs defeated teams from Claflin, UNC Pembroke, Livingstone, Limestone and Mars Hill.
Calhoun, Fleetwood, Little and Williams finished second in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:44.48. Livingstone won the 4x200 in 1:42.42. The Bulldogs notched another school record in the 4x400 meter relay. Wingate claimed second place with a time of 4:01.96. Little and Calhoun were joined by sophomore
Courtney Rainey (Concord, N.C.) and freshman
Mckenzi Mocilnikar (Marshallville, Ohio). Host Wofford won the 4x400 with a time of 3:57.77. The Bulldogs outraced teams from Limestone, UNC Pembroke, Claflin and USC Aiken.
Freshman thrower
DaMonique McClure (Charlotte, N.C.) achieved Wingate’s third school record Saturday, finishing third in the hammer throw with a toss of 33.37 meters. Freshmen
Christina Matheny (Akron, Ohio) and
Courtney Baxter (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore
Carly Candell (Annapolis, Md.) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin. Matheny’s throw covered 29.23 meters. Baxter (25.52 meters) and Candell (23.30 meters) helped Wingate claim three of the top five spots.
In the high jump, Matheny and Candell tied for second place at 1.61 meters. Livingstone freshman Brittany Burton won the event with a leap of 1.68 meters. In the triple jump, sophomore
Candra Mathis (Harrisburg, N.C.) earned a silver medal with her 11.13 meter jump. Freshman teammate
Shannon Daniels (State College, Pa.) received the bronze with a 10.72 meter leap.
The Wingate men achieved two individual school records and one relay high-water mark. Bulldog sophomore
Jonathan Smith (Cherry Hill, N.J.) improved his long jump school record with a leap of 6.87 meters. Livingstone freshman
Yacouba Meite edged Smith with his first-place jump of 6.92 meters.

Tyler Lee (Melbourne, Fla.) established a new school record with his 54.92 finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Lee was third in the race. He claimed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.03. Claflin’s
Larry Brunson won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.39.
Wingate’s distance medley relay team set a new standard Saturday, establishing a Bulldog school record with a third-place time of 11:00.26. The new record holders include sophomores
James Lawson (Wake Forest, N.C.),
Lamont Reaves (Vass, N.C.), Max Courtney (Monroe, N.C.) and
Biniam Ateka Belachew (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). The Bulldog crew defeated teams from Mars Hill, Wofford and Presbyterian. The Wingate men recorded five top-five relay finishes Saturday.
Sophomore
Astute Evans (High Point, N.C.) completed a busy 48 hours with a third-place showing in the triple jump. His leap covered 13.34 meters. Evans also saw action in the Duke Invitational Friday evening. Sophomore
Jesse Lavelle (Greensboro, N.C.) was fourth in the shot put (13.05 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (39.30 meters).
Freshman
Cole Henderson (Elon, N.C.) was third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.37. He won the second heat of the 100 meters on his way to a sixth-place finish in the main race (11.39). Henderson ran the anchor leg on Wingate’s third-place 4x400 meter relay team (3.26.18). He was joined by Reaves and freshmen
Corey Silvestri (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Scott Pullen (Roswell, Ga.).
The Wingate track and field teams will participate in the Western Carolina University Invitational Friday in Cullowhee. The Southeast Regional meet is slated for April 20-21 in Hickory. Lenoir-Rhyne University hosts the Southeast Regional.
