Wingate's Matheny earns NCAA provisional leap at Duke Twilight

Durham, N.C.----Wingate University freshman Christina Matheny (Akron, Ohio) cleared 1.68 meters in the women’s high jump Sunday, earning an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the Duke Twilight meet at Wallace Wade Stadium. Matheny and six Bulldog teammates competed in the annual event against top-level competition from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA. Several Olympic hopefuls participated as unattached athletes.

Saint Augustine’s senior Andrea Powell won the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.74 meters. Powell and Matheny outdistanced two jumpers each from N.C. State and Duke. Matheny cleared 1.60 meters in the regional high jump competition, earning a silver medal.

For the Wingate men, sophomore Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) ran a 9:20.10 in the 3000 meter steeplechase, missing an NCAA Division II provisional time by 0.1 of a second. Hammond finished 10th out of 19 runners. At the Southeast Regional meet April 21, Hammond won the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase (9:29.09) and finished third in the 5000 meters (15:44.34).
