‘Dogs win 66-55 at Anderson to remain perfect in SAC play

Box Score

Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs outscored Anderson University 41-27 in the second half Wednesday night, registering a 66-55 road victory in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action. The game featured the only two remaining SAC teams without a conference loss on the year. Wingate wins its sixth straight, improving to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. Anderson falls to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference. The win is the 200th career victory for Brian Good as a head coach.

The Bulldogs have won all six contests during their winning streak by double figures. The 11-point victory is only the second league win of less than 21 points this season. Wingate has outscored its opponents by 143 points during the winning streak. The ‘Dogs have outscored SAC opponents by a league-best 20.7 points per game this season.

Junior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Wingate attack, hitting seven-of-11 shots from the field. Senior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added 16 points on five-of-eight shooting. Senior guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) had 13 points and three assists, while senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points and eight rebounds. The preseason All-SAC selection became the eighth player in SAC history to go over 800 career rebounds on Wednesday night.

“This was a tremendous team effort,” Good says. “I thought our defense in the first half is what allowed us to have a chance. After struggling early, I thought Ethan’s defense was phenomenal. Down the stretch, we did what we do best. We got stops and got rebounds.”

Myson Jones, Chandler Hash and DJ McGowan had 10 points each to lead the Anderson attack. McGowan added eight rebounds, while Kyle Sledge contributed eight points and 10 boards for the Trojans. Reigning SAC Player of the Year Denzail Jones, who leads the league with over 20 points per game, was held to six points on two-of-12 shooting from the field.

The Bulldogs scored the first seven points, taking a 7-0 lead on a Turner jumper 2:19 into the contest. Anderson responded with a 17-6 run, taking a four-point lead on a triple from Hash with 9:55 remaining. The lead would remain between two and five until another Hash three made it 27-21 with 2:36 to go. A pair of buckets from Kincaid in the final two minutes helped Wingate cut Anderson’s halftime lead to 28-25.

A bucket from McGowan gave Anderson a six-point lead two minutes into the second half. Buckets from Turner and sophomore guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) helped trim the lead to one at the 15-minute mark. A Turner layup with 13:47 remaining gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the second half. Buckets from Chris Ross and Denzail Jones gave the Trojans a three-point lead with 8:36 remaining.

The Bulldogs responded with a 12-2 run to take a seven point advantage. Senior forward Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) started the flurry with a jumper, while Matilus knocked down Wingate’s first three of the night with 7:26 remaining to put the ‘Dogs on top. Senior guard Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) added another triple, while Turman capped the spurt with a layup at the 5:09 mark to make it 53-46. Anderson got back to within five on a pair of free throws from Hash, but a three-point play from Kincaid pushed the advantage to eight with 1:40 remaining. Matilus and Kincaid combined to go eight-for-eight from the free throw line in the final 45 seconds to secure the victory.

Wingate shot 48.1 percent from the field, shooting below 50 percent for the first time in 2013. The Bulldogs hit three-of-14 shots from three-point range (21.4 percent), while going 11-for-13 from the free throw line (84.6 percent). Anderson shot 39.6 percent from the field, hitting eight-of-27 shots from three-point range (29.6 percent). Wingate, which ranks second nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense, limited an Anderson offense that went 15-for-24 from beyond the arc on Saturday (62.5 percent). The 55 points for Anderson ties a season low. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Trojans 33-28 on the night, while converting 17 Anderson turnovers into 16 points.
