Wingate, N.C.----Seven different Bulldogs had at least four kills Friday night as the 14th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs swept the visiting Tornados of Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-16 to improve to 13-2 overall and 9-0 in the SAC. The 'Dogs have now won 10 consecutive matches and 24 straight league contests. Brevard falls to 3-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
Sophomore outside hitter
Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) had seven kills to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outside hitter
Susie Murach had six kills and 10 digs, while freshman middle blocker
Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) hit .625 with six kills. Junior middle blocker
Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) had five kills in one set of action, while redshirt senior right-side hitter
Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) four kills in five swings, adding six digs. Senior middle blocker
Allison Rickher (Matthews, N.C.) had four kills in six swings, while junior
Jenna Flanigin (Aldie, Va.) also had four kills. Sophomore setter
Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) handed out 24 assists in two sets, while redshirt junior
Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) had 13 assists and five digs in one set.
"We had three objectives tonight and we accomplished all of them," head coach
Shelton Collier says. "We wanted to win, we wanted to make some specific progress in some aspects of our game and we wanted to create some meaningful, competitive opportunities for some players. It was great for us to reach all three tonight."
Erin Rollins led the Brevard attack with a match-high 10 kills, hitting .320 on the night.
Fatima Gharachorloo added seven kills, while
Savannah Cox and
Megan Clark added four kills each.
Kayla Hanus handed out 15 assists, while
Aleksandra Vrvillo collected nine digs for the Tornados.
The first set was tightly contested; with 14 ties and four lead changes. A kill from
Bailey Hayes, along with a Wingate error gave Brevard a 12-10 lead. A kill and an ace from Stumpff gave Wingate a 14-13 advantage. The teams would then trade points, with another Hayes kill tying it at 18. The Bulldogs would score the next six points to take a 24-18 advantage. Stumpff had two kills, while senior outside hitter
Rianne Lang (Littleton, Colo.) added two aces. Another Stumpff kill capped the opening frame.
Wingate jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second frame, with Hilton and Rickher registering three kills apiece. A kill from Cox trimmed the lead to four at 10-6, but a Potter kill and Stumpff ace pushed the lead back to six. Kills from Hilton, Stumpff and Murach gave the 'Dogs an 18-9 advantage. Wingate ended the set with a 5-0 run; getting three Potter kills including the set-capping kill.
A Lang kill and two Brevard errors gave Wingate a 12-8 lead in the third set. A kill from Clark cut the lead to three, but the Bulldogs answered with an 8-0 run to take control of the set. Flanigin started the flurry with three straight kills, while Saehler capped it with three kills. The Tornados cut the lead to seven on a Clark kill and Wingate error, but another Lang kill gave the 'Dogs a 24-16 advantage. A Brevard error finished the match.
Wingate hit .306 on the night, with 44 kills and 14 errors in 98 attacks. Brevard had 28 kills and 13 errors in 95 attacks, hitting .158 for the match. Stumpff had a match-high three aces, while Lang added two.
Wingate returns to action Friday, Oct. 11, traveling to Tusculum for a 7 p.m. start. Brevard travels to Coker Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
