Wingate, N.C.----The Newberry College football team scored the final 21 points of the contest, rallying for a 42-28 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. With the victory, Newberry improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The NC Wolves snap a three-game losing streak in the Newberry-Wingate series. The Bulldogs hit the road Saturday, visiting Catawba for a 1:30 p.m. SAC contest. The Wolves return home the same day, hosting Tusculum for a 4 p.m. league encounter.

The Bulldogs' final two possessions ended when the hosts turned the ball over on downs. On its last drive, Wingate advanced to the Newberry 27-yard line in the waning moments. The Wolves ran one final kneel-down play as time expired.

For the Bulldogs, Nallenweg completed 38-of-56 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns. Derenda established career highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (99), leading both teams in each category. Berry and Funderburk caught five passes each as Nallenweg utilized 11 different receivers.

Murden connected on 12-of-20 passes for 175 yards and two scores. Livingston was his top target with five catches for 46 yards. Doctor rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries, finding the end zone twice. Clark was six-for-six on extra points and booted four punts for an average of 47.5 yards per punt.

The Bulldogs won the time of possession battle (36:22-23:38) and posted five more first downs than the Wolves (24-19). Twenty-three of Wingate's 24 first downs came through the air. Wingate's Anthony matched Newberry's Clark with three punts inside the 20-yard line. A Capital One Academic All-America® candidate, Anthony averaged 32.8 yards per punt on five kicks (42-yard long).
