Sunset Beach, N.C.----The Wingate University men's golf team adds hardware to the trophy case Tuesday, taking the title in the Lenoir-Rhyne University/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate at the Sea Trail Golf Links. The Bulldogs finished the two-day event with a 574, three shots better than second place Mount Olive (577). Wingate shot a one-over-par 289 Tuesday after a three-under-par 285 Monday. Eighteen teams and 102 individuals participated in this year's event.
"Our guys played well the last five-to-six holes," Wingate head coach
Corey Iacofano says. "With the weather conditions, I thought we did a great job grinding the entire day…we maintained our composure."
Four of Wingate's five players shot the exact same score they posted Monday, despite less-than-stellar weather conditions. Graduate student
Benedict Gebhardt (Wiesbaden, Germany) and freshman
Phillip Konnikov (Berlin, Germany) repeated their Monday performances with one-under-par 71s
Wingate sophomore
Tyler Stone (Peterborough, Ontario) shot a 73 Tuesday after a 69 Monday. The 2013 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year award winner, Stone joined Gebhardt and Konnikov on the all-tournament team. The three Bulldogs shot 142 for the 36-hole tournament, tying for third place on the individual leader board.
Bulldog sophomore
Henrique Pombo (Curitiba, Brazil) matched his Monday tally with a 74 for a two-day total of 148. Senior
Garrett Dahms (Bahama, N.C.) completed the tourney at 152 with back-to-back 76s. Mount Olive sophomore
Sebastian Andersen (Tonsberg, Norway) won a play-off to take medalist honors. Andersen and Lincoln Memorial junior
Braden Galyon (Powell, Tenn.) completed 36 holes at three-under-par 141.
"This tournament and our effort speak well for the season ahead," Iacofano says. "This is a first for this group of guys…none of them has won a tournament (prior to this week). We played an extremely strong tournament to get the job done."
Iacofano pockets his second LRU/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate championship trophy. The Bulldogs won the 2011 event with a two-day total of 572, topping Belmont Abbey by eight strokes. This year, three South Atlantic Conference schools charted in the top five on the team score board. Lincoln Memorial (579) was third, while Coker was fifth (587). Conference Carolinas member Limestone was fourth (586).
Wingate returns to the links Monday, Oct. 28 at the Rock Barn Collegiate Invitational. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts the annual event at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. The Rock Barn event will conclude Wingate's fall semester competition slate.
