Wingate opens three-game home stand Wednesday against Newberry

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs return home after a pair of conference road wins last week, hosting the Wolves of Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs are 14-6 overall and tied atop the SAC standings at 10-2 in conference play. The Wolves enter Wednesday’s contest 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

The Bulldogs went on the road last Wednesday, notching a 69-57 victory at Lenoir-Rhyne to complete the season sweep over the Bears. Senior guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) scored a season-high 20 points to lead the way, hitting seven-of-11 shots from the field while adding five assists and four steals. Junior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 15 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) and freshman guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) contributed nine points each.

The Bulldogs collected their 10th conference victory of the season Saturday, winning 69-46 at Tusculum to complete the season sweep over the Pioneers. Lewis scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half to lead the attack, hitting four triples while adding four assists and three steals. Senior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, while senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) added nine points and eight rebounds. The Bulldogs outscored Tusculum by 52 points in the two meetings this season.

Wingate and Newberry met in January, with the Bulldogs cruising to a 79-42 road win. Turman led five Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points, going seven-of-eight from the field. Turner had 11 points and nine rebounds, while Kincaid registered 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals. The Wolves are averaging 90.8 points per game this season, but were held to season lows in points, field goals and field goal percentage. The 42 points Wingate allowed were 25 points less than any other game this season for Newberry.

Wingate’s balanced attack has three players scoring over 10 points per game and seven players scoring at least six points per contest. Sophomore guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) leads the way with 11.6 points per game. He has missed Wingate’s last three contests. Daye is shooting a league-best 51 percent from three-point range, while ranking second in field goal percentage during conference play (60.3 percent). Turner is averaging 11.2 points per game, ranking second in the league with 8.8 rebounds per game. His 58.3 percent shooting in conference games ranks fourth in the SAC. Matilus is third on the team with 10.9 points per contest.

Turman is averaging 8.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, shooting a league-best 62.7 percent from the field. He has been even better in SAC games, shooting a league-best 64.6 percent. Kincaid is third in the conference with 4.0 assists per game, while ranking eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio. Junior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) is third in the SAC with 1.4 blocks per contest.

Newberry is coming off a 113-98 victory at #16 Lincoln Memorial Saturday. The Wolves knocked down 16 threes in the game, shooting 47.1 percent from beyond the arc. Brandon Riley led the way with 25 points, while Mitch Riggs added 20 points. Dondray Walker leads the Wolves with 14.2 points per game on the season. Quayshun Hawkins is second on the team with 13.7 points per contest.

During SAC contests, Wingate leads the league in scoring margin, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense.
