Queens wins season opener 14-5 over Wingate

The Queens University Royals jumped out to a 8-1 halftime lead Wednesday afternoon en route to a 14-5 victory over the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs in NCAA Division II lacrosse action. The Royals improve to 1-0 on the season, while Wingate falls to 0-1.

Matthew Michael led the Royals with three goals and an assist, while Casey Hock added three goals. Garrett Chan added a pair of goals for Queens, while Jason Krogulski and Evan Farkas had a goal and an assist each.

Freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals to lead the Wingate attack. Senior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added a pair of goals for the Bulldogs

The Royals got on the board less than two minutes into the contest when Michael netted his first goal of the day. Farkas added a goal with 2:11 remaining in the first period to make it 2-0. A goal from Cory Kloepfer with 20 seconds remaining gave the Royals a three-goal lead heading to the second period.

Chan scored 26 seconds into the second period to push the advantage to four. Watts netted Wingate’s first goal of the day with 8:27 remaining in the half to make it 4-1. The Royals responded by scoring four goals in the final eight minutes of the second period. Chan capped the run, scoring four second before halftime to give Queens an 8-1 lead at intermission.

A goal from Alex Sparrow three minutes into the third period pushed the lead to eight, while Farkas added a goal eight seconds later to make it 10-1. Michael added a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the period to push the advantage to 12. Vogrig netted his first career goal with 21 seconds remaining in the third.

Vogrig scored 2:17 into the fourth period to make it 13-3. Watts added a goal 38 seconds later, but Hock answered with a goal at the 11:24 mark to push the lead back to 10. Vogrig scored the final goal of the afternoon with 9:49 remaining, getting the assist from sophomore attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.).

Queens out-shot Wingate 45-32 on the afternoon, holding a 22-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Royals won 12 of the 23 face-offs on the day, while picking up 31 ground balls compared to Wingate’s 28.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, hosting Lees-McRae at 2 p.m.
