Wingate men and women notch wins at Belmont Abbey

Belmont, N.C.----The 26th-ranked Wingate University men’s tennis team registered a 6-1 victory over Belmont Abbey College Thursday afternoon, while the 30th-ranked women’s team won 7-1 over the Crusaders. The Wingate men improve to 5-3 overall, while the women move to 5-1 on the season.

The men won two of the three doubles matches on Thursday. Freshman Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) and junior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) won 8-1 win in number two doubles, while sophomore Josh Eardley (Newcastle, England) teamed with freshman Sebastian Hall (Lorrach, Germany) for an 8-4 victory at number three doubles.

Cancelado won 7-5, 6-2 at number one singles, while sophomore Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at number two singles. Freshman Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) rebounded after dropping the opening set 3-6, winning 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the match for the Bulldogs. Hall added a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at number four singles. Forbes and freshman Westin Bennett (Calgary, Alberta) were both leading their matches, but neither were finished due to darkness.

The Wingate women swept through doubles action, starting with an 8-6 win in number one doubles by junior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.). Sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) teamed with freshman Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) for an 8-0 win in number two doubles, while an 8-0 win in number three doubles from sophomore Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

Holland registered a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win in number two singles, while a 6-0, 6-0 win from Thomas at number three singles made it 5-1. Winston and Williams added 6-0, 6-0 wins at number four and five singles, respectively. Goreski was leading her match at number six singles, but it went unfinished due to darkness.

The Wingate men travel to Elon Saturday for a 9:30 a.m. start. Both teams will be in action Feb. 19, traveling to Coker for a 2 p.m. start.
