Wingate, N.C.----A huge second quarter helped the Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse team take an 11-7 Deep South Conference victory over Wingate University Thursday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. FSC is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the DSC. Wingate is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the DSC (NCAA box score).
 
FSC junior midfields Kevin Naslonski (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Shane Tompkins (Bear, Del.) led the Moccasins with four points each. Naslonski had three goals and one assist, while Tompkins posted two goals and two assists. Florida Southern sophomore attack Dane Sorensen (Victoria, B.C.) also scored two goals for the visitors.
 
For Wingate, junior midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) had two goals. Bulldog seniors Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) had one goal and two assists each. Six different Wingate players scored a goal Thursday.

Sorensen scored both his goals in the first quarter, giving the Mocs an early 2-0 lead. Derek Watts and Press answered for the Bulldogs, tying the score 2-2 after the first 15 minutes. Florida Southern put together a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead on a Tompkins goal at the 1:54 mark. Tompkins scored twice in the flurry.
 
Womble scored on an assist from Derek Watts to stop the bleeding with five seconds left in the second stanza. Womble’s tally started a 4-1 run for the Bulldogs. The push ended when Womble assisted on a goal by sophomore Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) with 13:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, cutting the Bulldog deficit to 8-6.
 
Naslonski and Wingate freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) traded goals, making the score 9-7 Mocs with 7:16 to play. Naslonski added two insurance goals in the final 3:20 to settle the final margin.

Florida Southern held the advantage in shots (38-28) and ground balls (36-26). The Mocs won 12-of-21 face-offs. Wingate and FSC scored one extra-man goal each. The Bulldogs were one-for-five on EMO opportunities, while the Moccasins were one-for-three.
 
FSC freshman goalkeeper Joseph Kuhn (Bel Air, Md.) allowed seven goals and recorded seven saves to collect his second victory of the season. Bulldog redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) had 12 saves and 11 goals allowed. Both Kuhn and Cooney played 60 minutes each.
 
Wingate embarks on a two-game Florida tour this weekend, visiting Rollins for a 1 p.m. DSC contest Sunday. The Bulldogs will play league foe Tampa Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Florida Southern concludes its N.C. venture Saturday, visiting Belmont Abbey for a 12 noon encounter.
