Bulldogs open 2013 home slate with 9-0 victory over JCSU Monday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s tennis team lost only three games Monday, taking a 9-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith University at the WU Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs (3-2 overall) are the number 26 team in the Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II top 50 rankings.
 
Wingate sophomore Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) won the battle of the number one players, taking a 6-1, 6-0 decision over JCSU sophomore Darrell Sawyer (Cincinnati, Ohio). Earlier in the day, Towlson and freshman Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Sawyer and junior Dion Chever (Newport News, Va.) 8-1 in the number one doubles match.
 
The Bulldogs host number 20 Francis Marion in an NCAA Division II Southeast Region contest Saturday at 12 noon. Wingate opens South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday, Feb. 12 versus Lenoir-Rhyne at Hickory High School (2:30 p.m. first serve). Johnson C. Smith (0-5 overall) hosts Belmont Abbey Friday at 2 p.m.
