Late flurry gives Coker 18-15 victory over Wingate Thursday

Hartsville, S.C.----The Coker College men’s lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the game, collecting an 18-15 NCAA Division II victory over Wingate University Thursday afternoon at Byerly Park. Sophomore midfield Keith LaClair (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the host Cobras with five goals and one assist. Senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.), junior midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals each for the Bulldogs (NCAA box score).
 
With the victory, Coker improves to 2-7 overall. Wingate is 1-8 overall. The Cobras return to Conference Carolinas play Wednesday, visiting Mount Olive for a 7 p.m. game. The Bulldogs host Deep South Conference foe Florida Tech Sunday. The first face-off is slated for 2 p.m.
 
Coker led 15-12 following a goal by freshman attack Mike Martiello (Westbury, N.Y.) three minutes into the fourth quarter. Wingate rallied, as senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) and sophomore midfield Zak Goings (Haymarket, Va.) scored unassisted goals 19 seconds apart to make the score 15-14 Coker. Bulldog senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) completed the 3-0 flurry on an assist from Vogrig to tie the game 15-15 with 9:58 left in regulation.
 
LaClair tallied the game-winner at the 8:37 mark on an assist from junior midfield Timothy Smith (Commack, N.Y.). Smith and junior attack Andy Campos (Los Angeles, Calif.) added single goals in the waning moments to provide the Cobras a cushion. The Campos goal concluded the scoring with 4:17 remaining.
 
The third quarter was a 5-5 draw, as Coker took a 14-12 lead entering the final frame. Coker’s Smith scored two goals in the third quarter. Press had three goals in the third quarter for the Bulldogs. Vogrig and Goings added one goal each. Press (2:31) and Goings (1:31) concluded the third quarter with goals to cut the Wingate deficit to 14-12.
 
The Cobras rallied for a 9-7 lead at halftime, thanks to two second-quarter goals each from Martiello and LaClair. Coker’s Martiello (12:24) and Wingate’s Chase Clifton (11:52) traded goals to start the second stanza, allowing the Bulldogs to maintain a slim 5-4 lead. Coker answered with a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 edge on a Martiello goal at the 6:21 plateau. LaClair assisted his teammate on the man-up tally.
 
Vogrig scored back-to-back goals for Wingate to tie the contest 7-7 with 3:32 to go in the first half. Coker junior attack Joshua Taylor (Calgary, Alberta) and LaClair finished the half with consecutive goals to give the hosts the 9-7 advantage at intermission. LaClair’s tally came with six seconds left in the half.
 
Wingate scored the last three goals of the first quarter to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the opening 15 minutes. Kendall started the run with an unassisted goal at the 3:34 mark. Chase Clifton scored two minutes later to tie the score. Wingate senior attack/midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished the flurry on an assist from junior midfield Bryce Sneed (Cary, N.C.) with 59 seconds left in the first frame.
           
Wingate outshot Coker 43-34. Wingate won 25 of the 35 face-offs. The Bulldogs picked up 49 ground balls, compared to 37 for the Cobras. Coker scored two extra-man goals in three EMO attempts. Wingate had five extra-man opportunities, but could not convert.
 
Both teams used two goalkeepers Thursday. Wingate redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) played 57 minutes for the Bulldogs. Cooney had five saves with 16 goals allowed. Bulldog sophomore Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) gave up two goals and made one save. Coker sophomore Tim Ryan (Glocester, R.I.) played 34 minutes; he recorded 11 saves and allowed nine goals. Coker senior Josh Masciarelli (Binghamton, N.Y.) saw 25-plus minutes of playing time with four saves and six goals allowed.
