Taylor Womble goal gives Wingate 14-13 OT victory over Fla. Tech

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) scored on an assist from freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) with 1:04 to play in the first overtime, giving the Bulldogs a 14-13 Deep South Conference men's lacrosse victory over Florida Tech Sunday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field (NCAA box score).

“I am proud of our guys,” Wingate head coach Michael Lawson says. “We’ve started to put things together the last couple of games. Everything came together today. Any time you win an overtime game…it shows a team has guts.”

In the extra frame, Wingate junior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) won the initial face-off and the Bulldogs immediately called time-out. Senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.) took a shot which was saved by Florida Tech junior goalkeeper Eric Biller (Westminster, Md.).
 
The Panthers took four shots at the Wingate goal on the ensuing possession; three were wide. The fourth shot was saved by Bulldog redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Wingate quickly cleared the ball, leading to Womble’s fourth goal of the contest.
 
Womble and senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) shared the Wingate lead with four goals each. Chase Clifton and senior attack/midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had two goals each. Womble and junior midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) topped the Bulldog charts with two assists each.
 
Wingate outshot Florida Tech 52-29. The Bulldogs held a 48-31 advantage in ground balls. Wingate won 23 of the 29 face-offs, with Sneed taking 22-of-28 encounters. The Bulldogs scored four extra-man goals in seven attempts. The FIT Panthers tallied one EMO goal in three tries.
 
The Bulldogs led 7-4 on a man-up goal by Vogrig with 2:51 remaining in the second quarter. The Panthers responded with four unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead five seconds into the third quarter. FIT sophomore attack Andrew Conley (Orlando, Fla.) scored the final three goals of the flurry, including the go-ahead goal with 14:55 left in the third frame.
 
Wingate had the answer, putting together a 4-1 push to take an 11-9 lead on a Womble buzzer-beater to end the third quarter. Three Florida Tech players tallied one goal each to put the visitors up 12-11 with 10:14 to go in regulation. Clifton and Kendall sandwiched Wingate goals around a score by Florida Tech freshman attack/midfield Nick Gardner (Jupiter, Fla.) to set the stage for a wild overtime frame.
 
Gardner, Conley and senior midfield Matt Durand (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the Panthers with three goals each. Biller was busy between the pipes; he collected 17 saves and allowed 14 goals in 62:56 of playing time.
 
Cooney earned the victory for the Bulldogs. In 32-plus minutes, he surrendered six goals and recorded three saves. Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) gave up seven goals and made one save in 30 first-half minutes.
 
Wingate hosts NCAA Division II number three Limestone Tuesday at 4 p.m. Florida Tech returns home to face Lenoir-Rhyne Friday at 7 p.m.
