Both Wingate teams remain perfect in SAC play with wins over Brevard

Wingate, N.C.----The 32nd-ranked Wingate University men’s tennis team won 9-0 against Brevard College Tuesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference tennis action, while the 34th-ranked Bulldog women’s team won 7-2 over the Tornados. The Wingate men have now won 30 consecutive SAC matches, improving to 11-6 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. The Wingate women have won 22 of its last 23 SAC matches, moving to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Brevard’s men fall to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the SAC, while the women fall to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Wingate men took all three doubles match Tuesday afternoon.  Freshman Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) teamed with junior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) for an 8-5 win in number one doubles. Freshmen Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) and Westin Bennett (Calgary, Alberta) added an 8-5 win at number two doubles, while freshman Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) and Sophomore Josh Eardley (Newcastle, Staffordshire, England) won 8-1 in number three doubles to make it 3-0 heading to singles play.

Cancelado won 6-2, 6-4 in number one singles, while Hall added a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 win at number two singles. Hennis won 6-4, 7-6 at number three singles, while Forbes prevailed 6-0, 7-5 at number four singles. Eardley won the opening set 7-6, then won a tie-breaker 10-8 after dropping the second set 6-2. Bennett cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number six singles for the Bulldogs.

The Wingate women also swept through doubles play Tuesday afternoon. Junior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) teamed with sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) for an 8-2 win at number one doubles. Senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) and junior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won 8-1 at number two doubles, while sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) won by default at number three doubles.

Winston cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win at number three doubles for the Bulldogs, while Williams prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at number four singles. Ferguson added a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at number five singles, while Goreski won by default in number six singles.

Both teams return to action Friday, hosting Tusculum at 2 p.m.
