Matilus leads Bulldogs to 63-52 victory at Carson-Newman Saturday

Box Score
Jefferson City, Tenn.----Wingate University senior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) scored 16 points on the strength of four three-point field goals as the Bulldogs defeated Carson-Newman 63-52 Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action at Holt Field House. Wingate (18-8 overall, 14-4 SAC) made a crucial 18-4 second half run to earn the victory over the C-N Eagles (19-7 overall, 12-6 SAC).

Matilus made six-of-10 from the field en route to his team-high point total. Bulldog junior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Wingate senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 10 points each. Turner narrowly missed a double-double, as he pulled down nine rebounds in his 39 minutes played.

For Carson-Newman, junior forward Antoine Davis (Rustburg, Va.) had 19 points. Davis started the game five-for-five from the floor; he finished one-for-eight. Eagle junior forward Cody Henegar (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) added 12 points. Wingate held C-N junior guard Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) to six points, 13.2 points below his team-best season average.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of these guys,” Wingate head coach Brian Good says. “We executed a total game plan. I was very pleased with our play on the defensive end of the floor. We are entering the post-season on a good note.”

Ironically, Carson-Newman defeated Wingate by the identical 63-52 score Feb. 2 at Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. After a second-half opening Henegar three-point field goal gave the Eagles a 35-33 lead Saturday, Wingate put together an 18-4 run to take a 51-39 lead with 12:14 remaining.

Six different Bulldogs scored points in the flurry, with Turman and Turner posting four markers each. Turman started the run with an inside jumper (19:02), while Turner ended the push with a lay-up (12:14). Carson-Newman scored only three field goals in the first 13-plus minutes of the second half.

Henegar and Sanders scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the C-N deficit to 51-44 with 5:56 remaining. Daye nailed a triple on the next trip down the court (5:31), nudging Wingate’s lead back to double-digits. The Eagles would get no closer than nine points in the waning moments.

Wingate led 33-32 at halftime, thanks to 11 points from Matilus. Turman contributed seven points. Davis had 15 points in the opening frame, thanks to perfect shooting. He hit five-of-five field goals, one-of-one from downtown and four-of-four free throws. The two teams experienced two ties and four lead changes in the first half.

Carson-Newman shot 25.9 percent from the floor in the pivotal second half (seven-of-27). On the other hand, Wingate hit 50 percent of its shots after halftime (12-of-24). The Bulldogs shot 46.2 percent on the day (24-of-52), while the Eagles made 34 percent (17-of-50). Wingate hit eight-of-14 from three-point land (57.1 percent).

Wingate had 32 points in the paint, compared to 20 for Carson-Newman. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Eagles 38-26. Wingate senior point guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) flirted with a triple-double, as the Bulldog floor general collected six points, six rebounds and eight assists. Kincaid made only two turnovers in 36 minutes played. Henegar had team-best totals of four rebounds and three blocked shots for the Eagles.

Wingate is the number three seed in next week’s Food Lion SAC tournament. The Bulldogs will host number six seed Newberry for a first-round game Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Wingate can share the regular season title if Catawba defeats Lincoln Memorial tonight in Harrogate, Tenn. If the LMU Railsplitters prevail, they win the regular season crown. In either scenario, Anderson (S.C.) is the number two seed and Wingate is the number three seed.
