Wingate, N.C.----The Tusculum College Pioneers won four of six singles matches, winning three third-set tiebreakers en route to a 5-4 victory at 32nd-ranked Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis action Friday afternoon. The loss snaps a 30-match SAC winning streak for Wingate, who falls to 11-7 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. Tusculum improves to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Bulldogs took two of the three doubles matches Friday afternoon. Freshman
Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) and Sophomore
Josh Eardley (Newcastle, Staffordshire, England) got it started with an 8-2 win at number three doubles, while an 8-6 win from Freshman
Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) and junior
Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) at number two doubles made it 2-1 heading to singles play.
Tusculum took the first four singles matches to clinch the match.
Lukas Winkelmann won a 10-7 in the third set tie-breaker to win over Cancelado in number one singles.
Nicolas Planchard won 10-7 in his tie breaker to win in number two singles against Hall, while
Paul Wiederspahn prevailed 10-6 in his tiebreaker to notch a victory at number four singles over freshman
Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.). Forbes won 6-2, 6-2 at number five singles for Wingate, while Eardley prevailed 6-1, 6-4 at number six singles.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 1 p.m.
