Wingate men and women notch 8-1 wins over Mars Hill Tuesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s tennis team rebounded from its first conference loss of the season with an 8-1 victory over visiting Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference tennis action Tuesday afternoon. The Wingate women remained perfect in SAC play with an 8-1 victory over the Lions. The Wingate men improve to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the SAC, while the women move to 12-5 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Mars Hill’s men fall to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while the women fall to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The Wingate men won all three doubles matches on Tuesday. Sophomore Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) teamed with freshman Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) for an 8-5 win at number one singles. Freshman Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) and junior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) won 8-3 at number two doubles, while freshman Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) and sophomore Josh Eardley (Newcastle, Staffordshire, England) notched an 8-1 win at number three doubles to put the ‘Dogs on top 3-0 heading to singles play.

Cancelado cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at number one singles, while Hennis won 6-2, 6-0 at number three singles. Forbes won 6-2, 6-1 at number four singles for Wingate. Eardley notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at number five singles, while Bennett won 6-2, 6-2 at number six singles.

The Wingate women also swept through doubles action Tuesday. Junior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) teamed with sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) for an 8-6 win at number one doubles. Senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) and junior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won 8-5 at number two doubles, while sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) won 8-1 at number three doubles.

Evers won 6-4 in the first set at number one singles, then after losing 7-6 in set two, won the tie-breaker 10-5. Winston won 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles, while Williams won 6-0, 6-2 at number four singles. Ferguson cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number five singles, while Goreski won 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles.
