Lenoir-Rhyne outlasts Wingate 16-10 in DSC action Saturday

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----Lenoir-Rhyne University midfields Imari Davis (San Diego, Calif.) and Edward Guerin (Jupiter, Fla.) scored three goals each to lead the Bears to a 16-10 Deep South Conference victory over Wingate University Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. L-R is 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the DSC. Wingate is 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the DSC.
 
Wingate senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) had three goals to lead the Bulldogs. Senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had two goals each. Senior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had one goal and a game-high five assists for the hosts.
 
Vogrig gave Wingate a 1-0 lead seven seconds into the contest on an assist from Watts. Goals by Guerin and sophomore midfield Jon Hanlon (Haymarket, Va.) gave L-R a 2-1 lead four minutes later. The two teams traded scores until Hanlon found the back of the nets with 24 seconds left in the first quarter, putting the Bears up 5-3.

Lenoir-Rhyne maintained at least a two-goal lead the rest of the way. The Bears led 9-6 at intermission. Womble opened the third quarter with his eighth goal of the season (10:28), pulling Wingate within two at 9-7. The Bulldogs would get no closer the remainder of the contest.
 
Bear junior midfield Tyler Kotch (Butler, Pa.) added two goals and one assist for the visitors. Wingate outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 41-36. The Bears held a 35-30 edge in ground balls. Lenoir-Rhyne scored three extra-man goals in five tries. Wingate had only one extra-man opportunity Saturday; Lenoir-Rhyne was able to keep the Bulldogs at bay during the only Bear penalty.
 
L-R junior goalkeeper Steven McGhee (Durham, N.C.) allowed 10 goals and notched 13 saves to earn the victory. Wingate redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) had seven saves and 16 goals allowed. Both McGhee and Cooney played 60 minutes each.
 
Both teams step away from DSC play for their next contests. Wingate visits Coker Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Young Harris (Ga.) Tuesday at 3 p.m.
