Wingate, N.C.----The nationally-ranked Wingate University tennis teams swept a South Atlantic Conference twin bill Saturday over Carson-Newman. The Wingate men earned a 9-0 decision, while the Bulldog women claimed a 6-3 victory. Both Wingate teams remain undefeated in SAC play.
“I am glad to finish the week with a win,” Wingate head coach
Michael Cabana says. “We have faced some tough competition over spring break; it was good to finish on a winning note. Also, we feel good to be 3-0 to this point in the conference season.”

Wingate lost only one set to claim the league victory. Wingate freshman
Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) won the battle of the number one players, defeating C-N freshman
Juan Sebastian Perez 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4). Earlier in the day, Cancelado teamed with junior
Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) to take an 8-4 number two doubles decision over Eagle seniors
Paul Birdsong and
Derek Holdway.
Forbes continues his steady play, as he topped Holdway 6-3, 6-0 in the number four singles match. Sophomore
Josh Eardley (Newcastle, Staffordshire, England) defeated Carson-Newman freshman
Jonathan Allen 6-4, 6-4 at the number five singles flight. Eardley and freshman
Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) defeated Allen and freshman
Dalton Moore 8-1 in the number three doubles match.

Wingate swept the doubles en route to the SAC victory. Bulldog seniors
Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) and
Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) and junior
Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won two matches each for the victorious Bulldogs.
In doubles, Winston and Ferguson earned an 8-2 triumph over freshman
Haleigh Chastain and sophomore
Jennifer Ott at the number two flight. Winston defeated Chastain 6-2, 6-3 at the number three singles position. Ferguson topped freshman
Brooke Sanderson 6-2, 6-4 in the number five singles match.
Goreski started her day by pairing with sophomore
Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) to take an 8-2 number three doubles decision over Sanderson and senior
Megan Wilson. In the number six singles flight, Goreski breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over C-N senior
Tiffany Delias.
Both Wingate teams continue SAC play Thursday, visiting Catawba College for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Carson-Newman steps out of the league fray Monday, as the Eagles host the University of the Cumberlands for a 1:30 p.m. men’s and women’s twin bill.
