Catawba rallies for 21-12 DSC victory over visiting Wingate

Salisbury, N.C.----The Catawba College men’s lacrosse team rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit to take an 21-12 Deep South Conference victory over Wingate University Friday night in Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Catawba evens its 2013 slate at 6-6 overall. The Indians are 4-3 in the DSC. Wingate is 2-12 overall and 1-6 in the DSC (NCAA box score).
 
Catawba junior attack John Scheich (Waxhaw, N.C.) scored a career-high nine goals and dished out one assist. Junior attack Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, N.C.) added four goals and a game-high three assists for the hosts. Wingate senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.) and sophomore attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) led the Bulldogs with three goals each. Senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) added two goals for the visitors.

The Indians scored the first three goals of the contest, as Scheich sandwiched two goals around a Ridolfo tally to give the hosts a 3-0 lead with 6:10 to play in the first quarter. Wingate responded with four straight goals to build a 4-3 edge early in the second stanza.
 
Wingate senior midfield Jackson Bunn (Wilmington, N.C.) got the Bulldogs on the board at the 4:31 mark of the first frame. Schumacher, Clifton and sophomore midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished the flurry to put Wingate up 4-3 with 12:50 remaining in the second quarter.
 
The two teams traded goals for the next 16 minutes with Clifton, Womble and Schumacher finding the back of the nets for the Bulldogs. Schumacher’s score (on an assist from Chase Watts) gave Wingate a 7-6 advantage with 11:47 left in the third quarter. Catawba would answer with three consecutive goals to take the lead for good.
 
Sophomore midfield Adam Hebert (Charlotte, N.C.) started the flurry with an unassisted goal (11:06). Thirteen seconds later, Herbert assisted Scheich on the game-winner. Sophomore attack Jon Williams (Hillsborough, N.C.) completed the run (8:35), giving the hosts a 9-7 edge.
 
Womble scored on an assist from Schumacher (7:40) to cut Wingate’s third-quarter deficit to 9-8. Catawba completed the quarter with a 6-1 run as Scheich and Ridolfo scored twice each. Senior midfield Cory Losselyong (Lewisville, N.C.) finished the third-quarter scoring (1:29), giving the hosts a 15-9 lead entering the final frame.
 
Clifton, Schumacher and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) scored goals for Wingate in the fourth quarter. Two of Wingate’s three fourth-quarter goals were the result of extra-man opportunities. Scheich completed his career night with three fourth-quarter scores.
 
Catawba held statistical advantages in shots (54-37) and ground balls (48-28). The Indians won 21-of-37 face-offs. Catawba sophomore midfield Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, Md.) led the way with 11 victories in 14 attempts.
 
Catawba senior goalkeeper Christian Klimczyk (Linthicum, Md.) picked up the victory. In 55 minutes, Klimczyk allowed 10 goals and collected 12 saves. Wingate redshirt junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) went the distance for the visitors. He surrendered 21 goals and recorded 10 saves.
 
The two teams will meet again Tuesday in the first round of the DSC tournament. Catawba will host the game in Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The game time will be announced by league officials this weekend.
