Wingate, N.C.----For the second day in a row, Wingate University junior
Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) won the deciding match, lifting the number 42 Bulldog men’s tennis team to a crucial 5-4 Southeast Region victory over number 50 Mount Olive at the WU Tennis Complex. Both Forbes and freshman
Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) won two matches each for Wingate (14-8 overall). Mount Olive is 12-3 overall.
“Ryan’s hard work this summer and extra work this season…is paying off for him,” Wingate head coach
Michael Cabana says. “He is healthy and fit. Ryan has stepped up his play for us…clutch is the best word I can find.”
Forbes defeated MOC sophomore
Stan Roffe (King’s Lynn, United Kingdom) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in an epic number five singles match. Cancelado defeated MOC sophomore
Edgar Bub (Kehl, Germany) 6-3, 6-1 at the number one singles flight. Earlier in the day, Forbes and Cancelado defeated sophomore
Henric Falkenburg (Lund, Sweden) and senior
Akio Mariano (Sao Paulo, Brazil) 8-4 in the number two doubles match.
Freshmen
Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) and
Roberto Hennis (Raleigh, N.C.) joined classmate Cancelado with straight set singles victories for the Bulldogs. In the number two singles match, Hall earned a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Mount Olive senior
Gabriel Santana (Aracaju, Brazil). Hennis defeated Falkenburg 6-3, 6-1 at the number three singles flight. Both Hall and Hennis won two singles matches each this weekend, as the duo picked up huge SAC victories at Lincoln Memorial Saturday.
Next on the agenda for Wingate is a home match versus Peach Belt Conference member USC Aiken Wednesday. The first serve for the Bulldogs and the Pacers is slated for 2:30 p.m.
