Eagles hand Wingate first SAC loss of the season 80-72

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as the visiting Carson-Newman University Eagles prevailed 80-72 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Eagles improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

Ishmael Sanders led the Carson-Newman attack with 25 points, adding four assists and four rebounds while hitting 13-of-14 shots from the free throw line. Reigning SAC Player of the Year Antoine Davis added 21 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Jared Johnson had 11 points, five assists and three steals. Carson Brooks contributed eight points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Eagles.

Freshman forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had a career-high 20 points to lead the Wingate attack, knocking down six-of-11 shots from three-point range. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) added 19 points, while senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 boards. Sophomore guard Xavier Griffin had 12 points and five assists for the Bulldogs, while freshman forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) contributed seven points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Eagles used an early 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead eight minutes into the first half on a Sanders layup. Sanders pushed the lead to seven with a triple, but back-to-back Dominguez threes made it a one-point game with nine minutes left in the half. The Eagles responded with a 13-0 run, taking a 28-14 lead at the 5:10 mark on a Sanders layup. Dominguez knocked down a three with 37 seconds left in the half, trimming the CN halftime lead to 34-26.

A pair of layups from Cureton cut the lead to four at the 15:27 mark. Dominguez buried a three, while a Griffin layup put the Bulldogs on top 45-44 with 11:39 remaining. The Eagles answered with eight straight points, taking a 52-45 lead on a Davis triple and free throw. Davis added another triple, while a layup from Brooks at the 6:16 mark made it 59-48.

Daye answered with a three, while a Turman dunk trimmed the lead to seven with 5:19 to go. Sanders answered with a layup, while a Johnson triple made it 65-53 at the 4:13 mark. The Bulldogs would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Carson-Newman shot 46.3 percent from the field, going seven-for-21 from three-point range (33.3 percent). Wingate shot 40.3 percent from the field, hitting 10-of-29 shots from beyond the arc (34.5 percent). The Eagles went 23-for-26 at the free throw line (88.5 percent), while the 'Dogs went just 12-for-22 at the charity stripe (54.5 percent). Wingate held a 42-31 rebounding edge, holding a 14-4 edge in second chance points. Carson-Newman converted 12 Wingate turnovers into 18 points on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for an 8 p.m. start.
