Rock Hill, S.C.----The sixth-seeded Tusculum College Pioneers scored in the final two minutes of regulation Sunday night to force overtime, while scoring in the final 70 seconds of double overtime to knock off top-seeded Wingate University in the men's soccer SAC championship match. The Pioneers improve to 10-7-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 13-4-1 on the year.
Wingate was playing in its first conference title match since 2008, trying to win the SAC Tournament championship for the first time since 2002. Tusculum wins its fifth SAC Tournament title, more championships than any other men's soccer team in the conference.
The regular season conference champion Bulldogs were ranked third in the NCAA Southeast Region poll entering this week's tournament, and will most likely earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Wingate's last NCAA Tournament bid was 2012, when the 'Dogs won their first-ever regional title, advancing to the first NCAA Elite Eight in program history.
Wingate got on the board first in the 15th minute. Junior midfielder
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) lined a free kick from just outside the box off the right post. Senior defender
Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was ready for the deflection and headed home his third goal of the year. The three-time All-SAC defender scored two goals in his final SAC Tournament. Gadsby got the assist. The all-conference and All-Region performer had a goal and three assists in Wingate's three conference tournament matches.
That would be all of the scoring until late in the second half. With just under two minutes remaining in regulation,
Andreas Kvam chipped one over the head of Bulldog keeper
Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) to tie the match at one.
Ricardo Da Silva had the assist on the play.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game looked to be heading to penalty kicks, but Tusculum was able to find the back of the net when a loose ball in the box was corralled by
Mark Patterson, who turned and found the back of the net to give the Pioneers the title.
Kyle Dickson notched the assist on the play.
Tusculum out-shot Wingate 16-9 on the match, holding a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers piled up 13 shots in the second half and two overtimes, while Wingate had just six shots in the final 63 minutes. Banick had three saves for the Bulldogs, while
Jorge Alvarez notched three saves for Tusculum.
Wingate will learn its postseason fate Monday night, when the NCAA Tournament field is announced at 7:30 p.m. A live feed of the brackets being announced will be available at NCAA.com.
