Late run gives Carson-Newman 67-60 victory over Bulldogs

Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles ended the game on a 13-1 run Saturday afternoon en route to a 67-60 victory over Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Eagles improve to 15-6 overall and 12-5 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 13-8 overall and 10-7 in the conference.

Ishmael Sanders had 22 points to lead the Carson-Newman attack, going seven-of-eight at the free throw line. Sawyer Williams contributed 13 points on five-of-seven shooting. Antoine Davis added 11 points and four rebounds, while Jared Johnson had 11 points, four assists and three boards.

Freshman forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, while sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 13 points, three assists and three rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) contributed 12 points, while redshirt freshman Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) had nine points. Senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had seven points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.

A Sanders jumper gave the Eagles an early 10-3 lead four minutes into the first half. Free throws from Daye and Griffin cut the lead to two at the 13:39 mark. The Eagles scored the next six points, taking a 16-8 lead on a Carson Brooks dunk. A layup from Williams gave CN a nine-point advantage with 3:50 remaining in the half. Daye answered with a triple, while a Daye free throw helped Wingate cut the Carson-Newman halftime lead to six at 35-29.

A Johnson triple three minutes into the second half gave the Eagles a seven-point advantage. Wingate answered with an 11-3 run to take its first lead of the game. Cureton had five points in the flurry, while a Hilliard layup gave the 'Dogs the lead. A Griffin triple, along with free throws from Hilliard and Cureton gave Wingate a five-point edge with eight minutes to go. Freshman Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) added a three to give the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game at 56-50 at the 7:43 mark.

Buckets from Sanders and Davis cut the lead to one at the 2:44 mark, while two free throws from Sanders put the Eagles back on top with two minutes remaining. Kevin Leatherwood took just one shot on the afternoon, but it was a big one, knocking down a three with 1:06 remaining to give the Eagles a 63-59 advantage. Williams added a dunk, while two free throws from Davis pushed the lead to eight with 24 seconds left. The Bulldogs did not make a field goal in the last 7:43 of the second half.

Carson-Newman shot 51.2 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-16 shots from three-point range (43.8 percent). Wingate shot 35.7 percent from the field, hitting five-of-21 shots from beyond the arc (23.8 percent). The contest featured 47 fouls, 56 free throws and saw three players foul out. The Bulldogs held a 26-25 rebounding edge, while converting 13 CN turnovers into 21 points.

Wingate returns to action Monday, traveling to Queens for an 8 p.m. start. The Bulldogs play their third road game in five days on Wednesday, traveling to Coker for an 8 p.m. tip.
