Late drought costly as Queens rallies past Wingate in final seconds

Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs did not make a field goal in the last 10:25 of regulation Monday night, as Queens University erased a 15-point second half deficit en route to a 59-58 victory over the visiting Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Royals improve to 12-10 overall and 10-8 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 13-9 overall and 10-8 in the conference.

Josh Clyburn had 11 points and five rebounds to lead the Queens attack. Nkosi Ali added 11 points, five boards and four blocks, while Jarrett Stokes had 10 points and five assists. David Mason also had 10 points for the Royals.

Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 12 points to lead the Wingate attack, hitting all three shots from beyond the arc. Freshman Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 10 points and seven boards, while seniors Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) and Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also contributed 10 points apiece.

A Daye triple five minutes into the first half put the 'Dogs on top 14-10. Queens scored the next six points, taking a 16-14 lead on a pair of Mason free throws. The 'Dogs answered with nine straight points to take a 23-16 advantage, getting four points from Parker along with a three from freshman Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.). Clyburn cut the lead to four with a free throw at the 6:26 mark. A Parker layup and Dustin Dodd (Concord, N.C.) three pushed the lead back to seven with 2:23 to go, while a Turman bucket with 1:40 to go put the 'Dogs on top 34-27 at halftime.

A 10-0 run gave the Bulldogs a 44-30 advantage 3:30 into the second half. Cureton and Daye had three points each in the flurry. Sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) knocked down a triple with 14:51 to give the 'Dogs a 15-point lead. Queens cut it to 12, but a Parker layup with 10:25 remaining made it 50-36. That would be the last field goal of the night for Wingate. Evans trimmed the lead to eight at the 7:31 mark with a layup, but free throws from Turman and redshirt freshman Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) pushed the lead back to 12 with 6:20 remaining.

The Royals scored 11 straight points over a four-minute stretch to cut the lead to one. Evans had four points in the spurt, while Mason's layup with 2:30 remaining made it 56-55. Cureton buried a pair of free throws to put Wingate on top by three with 52 seconds to go. He then came down with a rebound with 15 seconds remaining and the 'Dogs still on top by three. After a timeout, Ali stole the ball and got it to Stokes, who was fouled and made both free throws with 11 seconds left. Stokes then stole the inbounds pass and buried a 17-footer to give Queens its first lead of the second half with seven seconds left. A desperation three from Hilliard at the buzzer rattled in and out, giving the Royals the one-point win.

Queens shot 46 percent from the field, while hitting just one-of-11 shots from three-point range (9.1 percent). Wingate shot 34.5 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-16 shots from beyond the arc (43.8 percent). The 'Dogs were just five-for-23 from the field in the second half (21.7 percent). Queens held a 45-37 rebounding advantage, outscoring Wingate 34-20 in the paint.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, playing their third road game in five days at Coker at 8 p.m.
