#20 GRU Augusta hangs on for 6-3 win over #42 Wingate

The 20th-ranked Jaguars of Georgia Regents University Augusta won a tightly contested 6-3 match at number 42 Wingate University Monday afternoon in NCAA Division II men's tennis action. The Jaguars improve to 3-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-4 on the season.

Freshman Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) teamed with senior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) for an 8-6 win in number two doubles. Junior Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) and sophomore Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) dropped a tough 8-6 decision at number one doubles, while freshmen Fillippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) and Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) lost 8-5 at number three doubles.

Kudrick's 6-4, 6-4 win at number four singles tied the match at 2-2. The Jaguars took a 3-2 lead with a win by freshman Romain Ferreria (Bazemont, France) at number one singles, but Hall registered a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over GRU Augusta senior Victor Cabellos (Barcelona, Spain) at number two singles to tie the match.

GRU Augusta took a 4-3 lead when senior Romain Brunie (Les Clayes-sous-Bois, France) rallied for a 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory at number three singles against Pezzoli. The Jags finished the match with victories by freshman Joao Freitas (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Gustav Anderson (Stockholm, Sweden) at flights five and six, respectively.

Wingate opens South Atlantic Conference play Monday, Feb. 24, hosting Newberry at 2 p.m. GRU Augusta's next match is also against Newberry; the Jaguars entertain the Wolves Thursday at 2 p.m.
