Wingate, N.C.----The 42nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs opened conference play with a 6-3 victory over visiting Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The Bulldogs won two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Connor Kudrick (Spring, Texas) won 8-5 at number two doubles, while an 8-3 win from freshmen Fillippo Pezzoli (Milan, Italy) and Tyler Schofer (Graham, N.C.) gave the 'Dogs a 2-1 advantage heading to singles play.

Kudrick cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number four singles, while a 6-3, 6-2 win from Pezzoli at number three singles made it 4-1. Forbes won the clincher at number five singles. After dropping the opening set 7-5, Forbes won 6-3 and 6-0 to give Wingate the victory. Schofer added a 6-2, 6-3 win at number six singles to make the final margin 6-3.

The Bulldogs return to action Thursday, hosting Queens at 1 p.m.
